where to buy new 4 - 4 exhaust?
« on: May 15, 2007, 06:02:10 PM »
Decided to do a complete resto on my '81 650. I have 4 - 2 exhaust, in poor condition. Does anyone know where one may find a 4 - 4 exhaust that is close to the original? quick online search only gave me evil-bay ads that no longer exist. Thanks, Dave

MAC has some 4-4 systems, dunno if they cover the 650.  I do know that the system for a 78 550 is nearly 400 bucks, though :o

I was unaware that MAC made 4-4's for the 550's. Since I could not seem to find it, mind throwing a link my way?

I'd like that link, too. I just bought a set of used pipes that, while not sufferring from as much rot as mine (which are about to go from the inside), are in pretty bad shape on the outside (nicks, dings, and pitting).

Oz Cycle, ATV, Jetski & Salvage (Ottawa, KS) would sell me a used set for $650. I managed to find mine at a "local" shop some 3,000 miles away (in Oregon) for $350. A new set of pipes that was close to the original for $400 would be a steal. Honda wanted $750 for a new set of pipes the last time I looked in 1993 (and when they were still available).

78 550 is precisely my bike. I saw a lot of places selling new MAC exhausts, but only for the 750, as far I could tell (I ithnk that one was a MAC, might've been another manufacturor).

This is probably as good as it will get

Unless ic455 is right and MAC makes a 4-4 that fits the 1978 550. It's also possible there are generic 4-4s that can be fit to the bike. But they'd probably need one of those bending machines muffler shops use to fit the pipes or something. I just decided to buy the used pipes.

The $350 included the shipping, BTW. It was $300 for the pipes and $50 for the shipping.

I used some search service to find that local shop. I got the two quotes back via e-mail. I can dig up the name of the service I used if you like.

Sorry, guys, I misread my Dennis Kirk Catalog.  It's a 4-2 system, and does cover the 650 years 79-82 at a price of 358.99 P/N 25-533.  The only 550 is the 550 SC 1983 model.  I wasn't looking closely, I guess, just saw the 550 and then the price and moved on.  My apologies :-[ :-[

IC455, do you know if that search service covers Canada?
I assume you meant me, not ic455.

I don't know if the cover Canada, but I'm sure the vendors will ship, I just don't know at what price. Do you know anyone in Buffalo? If so, you might have it shipped to them and drive down to pick it up (assuming you're close enough).

The search service I used is here:

http://www.mrcycleparts.com/mcp.aspx

I don't know if that is the best one (or even a very good one), but wait a few days for all the offers to come in: I had a third offer that showed up four days after the first two (I think they showed up one and two days after I sent out the request). The third set of pipes might have been in better shape than the ones I bought.
If life were fair, I'd be dead.

I'm in Dundas, just west of Hamilton. Bought my petcock from Honda, $50 @#$%^. at least it comes with the filter, almost $30 on its own.
The wheel is not mine. I grabbed the pic off the net when I was setting up my SOHC4 user Id.
I have a bike I'm parting out, an '81 650 custom I dropped earlier this year. Need any parts?
Aslo I second that the 650 custom and nighthawk had 4-4, I got a sales brochure for my bike and it shows a 4-4. The 650 standard had a 4-2.
what candition carb in? my carb is missing a tjoint for the breather no biggie but still bugs me and the mount to hold vacumm valve on carb missing, a previous owner done some job to the carbs very poor rebuild i had strip them and rebuild honda wants like $80 for the little plastic t :D ::)
besides a set headers and new tires nuthing realy else needs im not using it stock, what coulr was tank on one you dropped and in what shaoe is it?
i know dundass ride thru there durring summers, usualy on my scooter till finish my cb650c.

I have two sets of carbs, VB44B's, both good for parts only. pressed in idle jets are damaged, long story, don't try to use them. Vent tubes are missing off both. Otherwise complete. The tank was blue, so are the sidecovers which are intact. Tank has a good sized dent in it. I too am looking for the toolbox cover. Under seat? mines behind the left sidecover. I took all the electrics (for spares), engine, seat, battery, Front wheel is bent, tires are at 50%.The bike was not in great shape when I crashed. Hand controls are all there still, and working! I still have the key and all the locks (ign, tank, helmet). Frame is in good shape, still has all the warning decals on it as well as a clean title. I rebuilt the forks this year, can't verify they are still straight. Odometer reads 60,000km Theres not much left of value (cables and such other junk) I am trying to find (as this thread is titled) a four into four. If I succeed I will have a spare 4-1, black, and a spare 4-2, chrome, in fair condition. I am going to sell everything of value seperate, the carcass as its own item, on e-bay. I have 5 free listings and don't think i will need more. Item 1- lockset, Item 2 - covers, Item 3 - carcass, Item 4 - carbs for parts, Item 5 - exhaust

I just bought a set of VB44C's off Zdeno in Kitchener. Paid $150, has all the tubes and even the plasic caps on the pilot screws, they are in like new condition. He may have more. If your like me, go there with only enough for the carbs. You will see lots of stuff you didn't know you needed! Nothing I can think of that I need, Thanks anyways!
i cried when the toronto zedeno closed, was 5 minute walk from my home ???

i have chain gaurd, fork ears and stock shock's if any that among stuff you need, my tank also dented no biggie to me gives character but needs major clean and linning.
ya under seat dont know about your bike but rest us side cover is directly below our seats ;D

next time im at ontariocycle salvage ill check for exhaust and let you know, how much for keyed parts? i know a guy with a 82 450 twin his ignition almost shot and there identical to ours.

All parts are best offer or trade. Between the two bikes, I have built a pretty good one, thats why I want to restore it. Basicly all I need now are the pipes and to do a good cleaning and detail work.
next time see guy ill tell him you have ignition, dont realy know him his bike parked along my regualar cruise route when he out side wrenching i stop and say hi, today he mentioned his ignition ready die.

Grrrr....brand-spanking new pipes, but FOR THE WRONG BIKE!

http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/cgi-bin/dss2-cgi/ProdSel.pl

If there's an Itialian firm reproducing one set of pipes, though, there's hope still.

[edited to add] I notice I did it again with the timed out database query link. If you dig around on the site, you'll find a brand new set of replacement pipes produced by an Itialian firm for an Honda 750 of 1970s vintage.

The '82 cb650sc should fit the '81. '79-80 and '81-82 650's are the same engine but not interchangable between the two ranges. I believe they went dohc in '83. Are you offering up these pipes or for yourself?. I was watching a set on ebay but missed the end of the auction, with shipping it would have been to rich for my blood anyway. The inside of my tank was heavily rusted. Cleaned the rust out with acid, this left me with a shiney tank inside, but also a tank that leaked. I coated the tank with POR15. It stopped the leak but I do not like the product. It took forever to dry and started flaking off in places. The new bike was previously coated with KREEM. This stuff looks like it worked a whole lot better. I hope to be pulling the engine this winter to do detail work on it (paint, polish, oil leaks etc). If I don't have the 4-4 yet I may repair the 4-2 and use that for now.
thibault(part supply) has brand new replica 82 659sc pipes by jardine, need email them to confirm they 4-4 just wanted see if they would fit, so those us in canada may be able go to local bike shops and get new exhaust ::)
