Juicier coils
« on: June 23, 2005, 02:26:34 PM »
I am looking to get new coils since the wires on our coils cant be completely replaced. Will the dohc 750 or 900 coils be fine? I want to make sure before I start blowing things out! They are supposed to be a bit more powerful which would be nice till I can start running new wires or connectors where needed.

I am running  cb 900 coils with points and they seem to work great!! I am told the points will burn out faster,so I am in the process of adapting 1980 cb 650 electronic ignition ,

If you can use another coil depends most of the primary circuil. The dohc 750/900 coils (AW82TRI) have a resistance of 2.1 ohm (primary) and 12 Kohm (secondary)
AFAIK(????) your coils have something like 4 Ohms at the primary circ. if so that would be quite a difference -> not good, too much current (good spark though, but only for a short time  :o )

The Dyna coils will fit the stock brackets with a little bit of filing and work great.  I am using the
5-ohm coil set with a Dyna S ignition, easy to install and set-up.  Even an electrical numb-nuts like me
managed to get it installed and set-up in no time.  And it's still working, doh!

Make sure you match the primary resistance, most likely 5ohms. Barrett99 is  right about the DYNA-S, no brainer, great result. Lower "ohmage" will result in a dead battery unless you do some mods to the regulator/ install some ballasts, generally reserved  for racing.

cheers....

or you could give VF coils a run, on a modified mount...
