Rattle can Spray Paint my Frame Chrome
« on: May 17, 2007, 07:40:16 PM »
I used Duplicolor Chrome

This is to cover the black.

I will coat this with Killer Chrome Spray Can ($27 a can so I did the Duplicolor first as a base coat *shrugs*) tomorrow if it doesn't rain.  Hopefully it'll look less like silver before I clearcoat.

You can see I did a half ass job of cutting out the center stand. Oh well.  Never buy Color Brite Primer.

I don't think you've got enough paint on there to really get the chrome effect.
As I am sure you know when you spray paint stuff there is a progression from little dots of paint, connecting and over lapping up to a point where the surface becomes saturated and kind of glossy and even.  If you add more paint at this time you get drips and over coverage. You want to get it to that glossy and even stage for the chrome effect to happen.  It looks like you achieved it in some areas on the freame but not all, hence the drab silver look, not the wicked chrome you were going for.
Good luck, go slow, and buy more spray paint! ;)

I find that paint most effective on smaller parts. And you need a thicker coating to get the shiny effect. It works well on bolt heads, but I need to almost let it pool to get a semi chrome effect. I was thinking that clearcoat may enhance the effect.

clearcoat will turn it gray,  I really don't think you will be happy with the end result after a few month's of riding.
if you look at the pics of my carbs you can see i also used dupli-gold with clearcoat, the clearcoat gave it a dull finish
like bobbyR said it's good for small parts.

just my experience, good luck
