British Motor Day N. GA
« on: May 18, 2007, 08:07:08 PM »
British Motor Day at Berry College in N. GA tomorrow.  A few old British bikes and lots & lots of old cars.  Everything is parked on the grass so I imagine w/ all those oil leaks there'll be a lot of bare spots on Sunday.  Last time I went there was a Brough Superior (if I spelling it correctly).  One of the coolest bikes I've ever seen.

Now now, be kind. Not everything on wheels made in England leaks!

Too bad I'm across the country.  Almost  all of my extended family lives in Rome and summerville.  Two of my aunts went to school at Berry.
I farted and made my son cry.

It was a super day w/ beautiful weather & campus and lots of great looking cars and a few cool bikes.  The old '63 Alpine ran great (w/ the new O/D and 38 duels) and my 15 year old son (w/ learner's permit) at the wheel.  I didn't notice any of the Triumphs, Nortons, or BSAs leaking but then they may have just been cleaned up for the show.  I really like 'em but could never own an old British bike because of the right foot shift - just too old to change.

Tell that to the people cleaning up behind the Queen on her recent visit.   ;D

Way back in the 70's - maybe very early 80's I had just come off of Stone Mountain after a long hike w/ a buddy and our dogs.  I saw several Park Police standing around and asked one that I knew what was going on.  He said some big shot was coming to look at the Confederate carving.  My buddy and I decided to sit and see who it was.  It turned out to be Prince Charles.  He walked right by and so we got up, in our cut offs and t-shirts, to say hello.  His body guards freaked and stopped us but he walked over to us shook our hands and pet the dogs.  He asked about the craving and we told him what we knew and how great Lee & Jackson were and so on.  I don't know about his mother or his 1st wife but I thought he seemed very nice.

Great story!

My god-father met him in NYC at some high class function.  He was walking down the receiving line and most people were simply bowwing and paying respect, but my god-father struck up a conversation with him about how they were related through distant cousins in Tennessee.  Prince Charles was very interested and quite taken with the story and even prolonged the conversation rather than simply acknowledging it and walking on.

Sorry, didn't mean to hi-jack the thread... on with the bikes!

Ol' Charlie was just glad he wasn't related to those two Yahoos w/ the dogs and the pickup truck he met in Stone Mountain Georgia
