MSD systems On mid 70's CBs
« on: May 23, 2007, 07:59:45 PM »
So i was riding home from work tonite and one of my spark plug wires melted and fell out. Not good!
So i found my self looking at new coils and wires for my scoot (74 CB550 With pods and open 4-1 pipes)
I would much rather pick up some kind of multi-spark system then buy new old school coils and wires.
I have crane cams HI-6 system (captive dischage multi-spark, and rev limiter) on my 68'  porsche and let me tell you... the power, smooth idleing and throttle response improved seven fold!!

There has got to be some kind of equivellent for old 4 cyl bikes. I would try using a crane box or a msd box but i'm worried about the current draw on my generating system, also these old bike have two point sets and two coils.

I have seen the dyna-s kits that just replace the points but nothing about multi-spark.
I have also read about older products simmalar but there has been posts talking about how the coils are hard to find.

Any help would be great!!!

I'm in Chicago

Thanks!!!

MSD is def. the way to go when it comes to ign systems. I have used them on both my past racecars and my current 55 Bel-Air with no issues what so ever..I am sure they sell SOMETHING that could be adapted to these bikes, what exactly I wouldn't have a clue...

I know they just came out with individual coil packs for the LS1 line of motors (maybe they could be adapted to the CB's ?)

what about MSD for the smaller honda cars.  i don't know much about the setup but i would think that it could be adapted to work on a sohc.

The Dyna 2000, while not super high energy, multispark, is a great ignition as it is digital. Combined with Dyna's ARC system (if it EVER hits the market) it would be fantastic. Maybe the dyna S pick up plate/rotor can be used with the MSD though the mechanical advance would have to neutralized. The Dyna 2000 plate/rotor would be better IMO because of the elimination of the mechanical advance with the system.

As an exercise in engineering this project might be interesting and produce good results.  However if you are simply looking to upgrade your ignition components then the Dyna S system or even better the Dyna 2000 (both with new properly matching coils of course) will give you excellent results.  I would doubt that going beyond these options on a street bike will yield much in the way of returns.
