He said to deliberately misadjust the carbs so that only one was delivering power and then adjust it's idle screw.....repeat for the other three. Having done that...then match the vacuums for all four. Sorta like optimizing the adjustment effect...sounds reasonable.

I don't tend to associate the idle mix adjustment with synching the carbs.  For me, those procedures are completely separate.  Unless you're talking about the idle speed stop screw, but then there's only one which controlls all four carbs.

Not on the K0 carbs :/
No.

Hoping someone could clear things up for me that the OEM shop manual didn't (TT) ;D

Is it, cam chain, valves, points, timing, carb sync with a fresh air filter?

About the last one, is it carb sync after adjusting the air pilot screws evenly, or after?

And lastly, could unbalanced carbs cause a knocking noise from the engine while idling at 1100-1200 rpm??

Cause if I give it throttle and maintain at 1800 rpm and up, it's perfectly smooth and quiet....... except the worn cam chian ;D

It's a 75' CB400F with 24k miles.

Thanks

That's your basic tune up!
About the last one, is it carb sync after adjusting the air pilot screws evenly, or after?

Carb sync before pilot screw fine tune.  But, make sure the pilot screws are same number of turns before carb sync.

And lastly, could unbalanced carbs cause a knocking noise from the engine while idling at 1100-1200 rpm??

Well, yes, I guess.  Hard to hear an internet knocking sound, though.  You could be describing transmission gear clack caused by uneven firing impulses between the 4 cylinders changing the crank rotational speed.  There not much of a flywheel on these bikes to keep crank speed even.  Does the noise change with clutch engagement status?

Negative.......With the clutch pulled in, there is no change in the sound.

Reason why I ask about the tune-up, is because I tuned my 76' CB400F last year, and before the maintenance, it had the same noise.

So after my tune-up, I said to my self, " Wait a minute, what the heck, where's that sound?????"

But as soon as fall arrived, with the temps in the lower 50's, the noise came back!!! Mind you, that was some 4 months later.

Are.... I'm sorry, could the cb400f's be that touchy?? And I made sure the lock nuts didn't move by putting some llaquer paint lines on each.

And lastly, has anybody ever told you that you are 1 big ??? set too this forum??

Your help is very appreciated

I never synched carbs on my my 550K. I did a basic manual setup, checked points and sparkplugs plus the ususal stuff and do my regular oil changes but never bothered about carb-synching. For the last four years she always started and never let me down....

The inline fours idle and run a lot smoother if the carbs are synced. I have never tried just setting the carbs manually, but the adjustments are so touchy using the guages I don't see how setting them by mechanical measurements is possible. Maybe I should try it once.  ::)

If you don't synch your carbs.....you're missing out. If you don't use a Morgan carbtune....you're working too hard!!!!! Just my opinion.

Morgan Carbtune arrived today in record time... those guys are fast!

I got the case with the tool and am glad I did - very well made, well organized and designed to protect. Highly recommend if you are making a buy! :)

The only problem with the Morgan Carbtune is that it works so well all your "friends" will want to borrow it!  ;D

I agree.. especially on a K0. The Morgan is so much more acurate than gauges.

You provide the beer and the cost of a baby sitter and I'm sure I can make it.  It would only be a 3, 4 day trip up and back ;D

Thats the one I got, man my bench sinc was way out.  Not to bad now after about 1/2hours work.  Now I just have to wait for the boss to get home so I can take the bike for a spin and see if there is a difference.  Also when I was younger I use to run 3000 to 3800 Miles a week.  Well the 3800 was in 4 days, burned me out.
