Help Needed - Stolen 1976 CB750F
« on: May 22, 2007, 04:35:42 PM »
hi
I had my 1976 CB750F stolen from a parking lot in Worcester , MA this afternoon  (Tuesday May 22).  It had a MA registration AZ7533 and VIN CB750F2011515.  I will post the engine number later.

It has a burgundy, original, somewhat faded tank, new burgundy rear cowl and is generally in Excellent condition.  The only obviously non stock items are cast wheels.  It had the original  (kinda ugly) factory 4-1 exhaust system.  The odomenter reads 61,500 miles.

There is a reward of $1000 for information leading to its recovery.  I am the original owner   :(

You may call me at any time at 978 928 5094  or email me at jagoulet@charter.net

       thank you

That sucks there is hope it may be found my friend got his Harley back, police found it in Florida 3 months later all beaten up being driven by an highly intoxicated felow who purchased it for $500 from "some Guy". Got stolen during Daytona bike week. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about that. Especially heart breaking as you are the original owner and will have seen it through it's whole life so far.

I really hope it turns up somewhere unharmed.

That's a real a-hole move on some thiefs part. What...is he going to sell the parts for 500.00 on ebay? ::) A new GSXR, R1 etc would make more sense. After owning my F for over 30 years I can only imagine how you feel. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your bike.  If you have any close up picks of parts, it will help to identify them if they pop up on ebay.

why would anyone want to steal an old bike; some people need the stupid award.

Like what was said above, there are much hotter bikes out there than an old sohc. Catch the guy and cut his hands off.

That's some sorry news John. I'll keep my eyes and ears open here in my part of the state. I'm sure you know to check with bike boneyards not only around Worcester but in NH, RI, VT and CT...maybe ME and NY too. As has been mentioned keep your eyes on ebay and craigslist too. craigslist in all the states I mentioned. I'd report it to the MA state police too...their database might be better than the Worcester PD.

If you're lucky...geesh how can this be lucky...but maybe it was just taken for a joyride and will be found soon not far from home. Hang in there man...

Mike, you would be surprised what some people would do for under $500.00. John you have any drama with someone in the area? Think carefully about that and if so watch them. If you have a kid or joyriders, ask a local cop where stuff gets dumped. Every area has a dumping ground.

I am happy to report the bike was recovered abandoned within a few miles of where it was stolen.  Someone hot wired it and went for a joy ride as best I can tell.  Damage was pretty minimal, mostly the sidecover over the electrics on the left side got trashed during its removal (however I had just bought new ones but not installed them so this was no real loss).

So I am delighted to have the ol' girl back!  Now I need to give serious thought to how to keep this from happening again.

Thanks to all of you for your supportive responses and to my good friend Mike who spent many hours riding around Worcester with me looking for it.

Congrats I'm glad to hear you got the old girl back. Probably opportunist thieves then, a good chain should stop that from happening again. My partners Suzuki RF600 was stolen last year from outside our house and the police found it only about a mile away, hotwired and involved in the attempted theft of a much more expensive bike. The theft of his RF was probably opportunistic as it wasn't locked and could just be wheeled away.

My 250cc scooter was nearly stolen last month too (dodgy area). My alarmed disc lock that I'd bought just two days earlier saved the day. Without the alarm I reckon they may have been able to drag it away and attack a normal disc lock.

Great news John! Quite the emotional roller coaster ride eh?

Two things I do to try to slow down anyone attempting to make off with my bike along with use of the fork lock...my cover is padlocked to the front wheel and I lock the rear wheel to a shock with a Citadel bicycle u-lock. If anyone really wants it they can get it but it wouldn't be a quick job.

Good to hear you found your bike.....

Anybody ever put remote battery cut-offs like the hotrod guys do?
I'll be finished with my project soon & after reading this post, I'm considering something along those lines.

Did you find it, or did the boys in blue find it?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

As I was reading your original post I was thinking to myself, "He is never going to see that bike again.  It's probably in parts by now."  I have to say I am glad I was wrong!

Someone posted an article about stealing bikes a while back.  The stole their own bike in broad daylight with a ton of witnesses and when the witnesses were asked, no one saw anything.  >:(  The bikes even had alarms on them!

I have been thinking about using a rubber coated chain as my anti-theft devise.  Just run the chain from the frame to the front wheel.  I know using the back wheel would be more effective, but I think visibility of the chain is a big deal.  The would be thief might not see the chain on the back and tear up the bike before they realize what is going on.  If it is easier to notice (most thiefs are not the brightest bunch) they may just move on to an easier score.

I like that locking starter solenoid accessory!!

As we were riding around looking for it  (we found it, cops did not), I had alot of time to think about how easy it would be to steal a bike not chained to anything.  We estimated that 3 decent sized guys with a pickup truck or van could simply pick it up and load it in perhaps 30-45 seconds.  Even with the steering column locked (which actually might help as it stiffens the chassis up if you think about it).

A quality cable would be a big improvement. Chains are probably too fast to cut through with bolt cutters but there must be hi-tech chains.

Do any of you guys use an alarm system??

As to the "Why" of it...who knows??  If I totally parted the bike out and sold every last piece on ebay, maybe I get $1000 but it would take weeks. Alot of trouble for a modest amount of money. So the joy-riding idea and maybe the challenge of it  (somebody watched Gone In Sixty Seconds too many times and took it seriously)

Personally it would have been a disaster. Far worse than a new bike as I could not replace it , or even want to. I have probably worked on nearly every single component of it over 31 years and it's an old friend by now. Someone could give me a mint, low mileage identical bike and I would have little interest. But you guys understand...

Anyway, thanks for all of your thoughts and concern!!

Hi John,

Man oh Man, am I happy for you!  Congrats on finding your bike in basically good shape!

Though I'm a grown old man, I have to admit I would be a heart broken little kid if my 750 were stolen.  There have been at least 6 attempts to steal mine that I am aware of.

One attempt was stopped by the CEO (of all people) at the place where I work.  I had a wheel lock on the rear wheel (one of those U shaped bicycle type locks that goes through the shock absorber, spokes, etc.) and was inside the fenced compound at work.  The CEO saw two men grabbing the bike and starting to lift it off the ground.  They had a van outside the fence with its side door open and were going to lift it and put it in the van.  He yelled at them, "What the hell are you doing?," they put the bike down ran to the van and split.

Now, I use the rear wheel lock and always chain to the fence post at work and I chain it to an "I" beam at home in an apartment complex that I live in.  The chain is VERY thick linked and is made of what is called "PreStressed" steel.  I remember when I bought the chain, they actually had difficulty cutting the links with a hydraulic actuated cutting press.  I feel better about things now with the chains that I have.

Anyway, very glad to know that things have come to a good conclusion for you...... ;D ;D ;D

Do any of you guys use an alarm system??

Forgot to mention it earlier. I sometimes use a portable alarm system. It's about the size of a pack of cigarettes and makes a decent amount of noise for being such a small unit. It's loud enough that you wouldn't want to be in the same room with it. It works on motion, can be adjusted for sensitivity, is battery powered and fits under the seat. I don't know if it's still made but I bought two a while ago on ebay. The brand is Quorom...the model is Elert.

Great News John!

I thought of you yesterday when I left my '76 on the street in NYC to run up to my apartment - fortunately, I have a doorman at my building.

I am very glad to see this morning that you recovered your baby!
