Won't Start son of a *&@#^$%#
« on: June 14, 2007, 08:48:36 PM »
Stock 1978 CB750 with Dyna S

Today after work I put clipons on the bike.  I drove home fine and around for a test drive everything was ok.  Tonight my girl and I get on the bike and go for a ride and down the street.  The clutch is wicked hard and only really grabs and releases with the first 1/2" of pull.  Nowhere near what it has been before.  There is no friction zone now.  We get to a light and the bike dies as I ease off the clutch and get ready to go.  Electric start is doing nothing, so I walk it to the corner and kick start it.  It fired up and we make it home ok.  So I get my tools and go outside to fix the clutch issue.  I reroute the cable to give it more play.  I kick start it once let it idle and turn off.  I put the clutch cover on and try, nothing.  The electric start wont even click and lights are dimming.  I don't feel like pulling the plugs right now I will do it tomorrow.  What the hell!?!!?!?  Let the 78 bashing begin  ::)   I'm ready to pay some one to make this piece run reliably!!!

charging system quit?  Mine did on Tuesday, didn't find out till yesterday.  I'm now in the process of trying to figure out if its the loom, reg, or rec.

Battery is definitely flat.  I bought it new 2 months ago, so I know its still good.  I don't know if there is a clutch diode switch, I don't even know what a clutch diode switch is?  :-[

Whats the process to check and examine the charging system?  Is there a flow chart of items or can it be one of many things?

When it's running, check the voltage at the battery, not just at idle.  When you rev it, it should read 13.5 to 14 volts.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Found it this morning, a loose red/white stripe wire to the rectifier, (hope it didn't toast it).

Hear is a flow chart but the colors will be off because this is for a Suzie, but the principal is the same.

TT has some good explanations on checking the electrics if you search for charging issues.
