Looky what I found behind my sprocket cover
« on: May 21, 2007, 05:27:20 PM »
...... a sprocket  ;D  and a self oiler  ???  ???  ??? I didnt think the self oilers were used on 76's.

Anybody care to point me in the direction of a serial # chart so I can find out what year engine I have?     # CB750E-2391548

BTW.....I have already taken out the bolts. Went to looking at an online manual when I saw in a supplement to the K1-K4 about adjusting the oiler. I thought......Hey! I've got one of those! WTH!

You are correct. The auto chain oilers ended with the K6:

The serial number chart can be found in the specs section of this website: http://www.sohc4.us/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=39&Itemid=49

Thanks Jonesy.

CB750 K5 2372115~ 2500001~

So I have a 75 engine.....correct?

Anyway.......I was looking at the manual to figure out how to get the thing off so I can change my sprockets. Its got a "keeper tab" on it.......Im assuming you bend the tab out of the way and the oiler will unscrew, then the 2 holed sprocket "keeper" will come off, then the sprocket?

The splines on the shaft will be the same. Plus, since the K3, all the mid-70's K models went with the 18-48 ratio. You'll be OK.

To remove the sprocket:
-Bend away the locking tabs on the tanged washer
-Remove the bolt in the end of the shaft (it's helpful to put the bike in gear or have a helper apply the rear brake
-Remove the 2 bolts holding the sprocket setting plate on
-Remove the sprocket setting plate by turning it slightly until the splines line up with the spline grooves in the shaft and pull it forward off the end of the shaft
-Pull the sprocket off the shaft

Done deal  8) Thanks again Jonesy.

After getting the sprocket off, found out its a 17 not an 18 tooth. As I had mentioned in my sprocket recommendation post, I liked the way the bike pulled, and that coincides with what the others had said about the 17 tooth sprocket. Cool....now if my sprockets would hurry up and get here.

Now that oiler brings up another question.....since Im gonna be running an EK 530 MVXZ X-ring chain........do I need the oiler? I dont think it was adjusted correctly anyway cause I never noticed any excess oil on the chain....other than when I lubed it myself. Can I just turn the adjusting screw all the way in and shut it off?

What are you with the oilers and O-ring/X-ring chains doing?

Close off the oiler and use real chain lube.  Oil flies off a lot easier than chain lube, and you dont use engine oil.

just shut down the oiler and be done with it, lube chain manually.
not so sure the oiler ever worked very well anyways.

cheers!

My experience:
the 16T sprockets over-oiled, the 17T were just right, and the 18T barely oiled at all. I think the centrifugal force changes were just significant enough to do these things. I recently went to a 17T after a long time with 18T front, and now it's working again! I had to fully lube it with the 18T, now it stays just a bit damp.

I have a 17 tooth up front now and I love it.

I have a DID O-ring chain. I just turned the adjuster screw all the way in and have used Honda HP chain lube from then on.
