I've been working on my friend's 74 750 for about 6 weeks (parts delays and day job made it take longer than it should) and last night he came over to help put the last pieces in place. We got the tank hooked up, battery in and turned the key on to hear the starter start cranking. An hour later the starter button has been re-soldered and we try again. Engine turns and absolutely nothing except the smell of gas. She getting gas, must be spar..... After connecting the points leads she fired on the first turn and sounded better than I expected with just a bench synch and timing. Gave her a few adjustments, synched the carbs the best I could with only 2 on my mano screws being the right size (still have the larger size from working on another friend's 350) and took her for a spin. Not too bad and felt good to have her back on the road.
I'm ordering the screws since I can't find the missing ones. He should have about 600 miles on her by teh weekend so we'll switch out the oil, check valves, timing and carb synch, then let him open her up for the first time.
This is the first time I've had one start up so strong straight off of the bench so I'm kinda excited. Thanks one more time to this forum and all of its contributors. Wouldn't have happened without you all.
James
PS I'm planning on getting some pics when he brings her back for tune-up.
