Cases and tranny back together correctly and it appears we have 1st through 5th once again!! WOO HOO!!

Now it's on to my intermittent starting issue. See a few pages page when I first started it up. The starter will spin freely on occasion. SOmeone mentioned a fix. I've got to look myself and see what I can do.

As long as the starter motor is responding to the push button, and the clutch itself hasn't blown apart (possible but I've never seen a starter clutch failure), the problem is likely the "springs, caps and rollers".

There are 3 sets. The springs are like from a ball point pen. THey get fatigued and can no longer engage the rollers with enough vigor to turn the engine. Hardest part is removing the rotor from the crank. The springs are the main thing to replace, but might as well replace the caps and rollers too while your in there. The more you try to start it with this slipping happening, the more damage is done.

Happened to me once in all my life. Seen it a few times on other bikes.

Happens a lot on the Yamaha Virago's.

Either the clutching slips or they literally start chewing themselves up.

Sounds like a box of rocks.

I had a CB550 that did that.... Turned out the teeth on the starter had worn down after decades of use.

No? I was 12 last time I saw a real live starter on a 550. I just remember my father swearing at how much a new one cost.

No? I was 12 last time I saw a real live starter on a 550. I just remember my father swearing at how much a new one cost.

I looked it up on a fishy, gear drive with no reduction gear like the 750 has. So I could see shelling the teeth off the starter motor.

Well, it's been a little bit since I have updated... Not much to update on, though.

The engine is back in the frame (yay!). My Dad and Brother came up for Christmas and they helped me heft the engine from my holder to the frame. The heavy lifting is done now I just have to bolt it all together and move onto seat mounting.

Anyone been able to mount a cafe seat and keep the stock hinges working?

YSS shocks. Tons of adjustment in them. Cost a bit more than a stock replacement, too,

but worth it, I am hoping.

If you know which model of YSS shocks you bought, and their length...PLEASE let me know.

You get these, then try to figure out how to make the forks keep up!

10mm height adjustment. I've got them pretty much maxed out due to the smaller diameter rear tire I'm running.

The forks from the kat have some adjustability, too. Not as much as the new rear shocks do, but some. A fork rebuilt is in the plans for the spring anyway, so I'll have to make sure they're working like they're supposed to.

Do you know what length of shock you bought? they offer from "280" all the way out to "400" something.

Since it's been cold, I really haven't been doing much work on the bike. I have no heater in my garage.

I have been thinking about paint, though.

Here is how it stands as of right now (seat just sitting in place):

I have come up with a couple of options. At first I was thinking about going a nice burnt, metallic Orange:

Then I was thinking that just a Red to match the engine:

Then I thought about silver to match the frame:

It would clearly need something on there as well... racing stripes, etc...

I don't know. What do you all think?
