How to make ammo box saddle bags.
« on: May 27, 2007, 07:10:23 AM »
Some of you may remember me making a few posts about wanting to make ammo box saddle bags.  Some of you may actually give a damn. :D  Well I finally got around to taking pics of my work so far, very close to being done.  I purchased what I believe are 50 cal. Ammo boxes from a local store that carries a small amount of military surplus.  They measure 12 1/2 inches long, 7 1/2 inches wide, 8 1/4 high, think those are right, close anyway.  I also happened to notice that the frame off of my Troy-Built mower's grass bagger was a perfect candidate for chopping and welding into a suitable frame.  I then got the part # out of my manual and ordered another one from Farm and Fleet's small engines dept.  The pictures will explain the chopping/welding.  They are made out of 1/4 inch steel rod, very sturdy, but the original welds where a bit shabby so I reinforced them all with new welds.  I'll take more pictures of how they mount to the bike and post those before I attempt to explain how that works, but you'll like it.  I paid $20 for each ammo box, which I think was too much, but they were there and in great condition.  I paid $20 for the other braket, again too much, I could have just bought strait lengths of steel rod and bent it all up, but then I dont have a bender unless you consider my vice and brute force a pipe bender, so I took the easy way out on that one.  You can see all the bends I had to make so it would hug the frame, to clear the seats bottom edge, and that was enough.  The random hardware/locks I purchased for it(didnt use it all) totalled around $50 Id say.  So: $40 for the boxes, $20 for the braket, and $50 for hardware=$110 total cost.  So the goal of cheap  but sturdy is met.  The whole thing: brakets, boxes and locks weighs about 20lbs but add another 10lbs or so for the luggage rack that is a big part of how this thing mounts up, so I think it remained fairly lightweight.

I sure struggled with keeping the boxes their original olive drab, then again when I got the grey primer on them.  Either color would have looked pretty mean, but then I figured the bike they are going on is a nice example so I figured I'd paint them  gloss black.  I only did 2 coats, 3 would have been better but I didnt want it to get any glossier.

Nice Work! :)  I can't wait to see them finished and on the bike.  You should put this in the Tiips and Tricks section.

Now that's a cool idea! Just need to have a set made for this bike...

It's a OCC bike made for the Army. I saw it on display while I was at Fort Knox. I don't think they had an episode on this bike.

I guess this might have been more helpful earlier, but I met a guy the other day who has the BMW F650, and has ammo cans mounted.  He recommended this site:

http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/AftermarketLuggageFAQ.htm#Home made Ammo-Can Panniers

There are lots of other options for luggage for the F650 there, but it might give others here some ideas.

thank you gave me few idea's wont be doing exactly how you did but gave me some base idea's, been trying figure this for a while, not for my honda tho but for my suoped up 50cc 2t scooter i like doing long hauls on it on 80kph roads (base line 92.2kph=60mph) and even tho has milage of 100kpg only have 1gallon tank and can be as much as 200k between gas stations so wanted put ammo can on one side for tools and parts and a army style olive metal jerry can on other side, now you showed me how do it build lockable cages that can switch between ammo cans and gerry can's so can leave under seat for second riding gear for picking up babes ::)

Excellent work and the fit is really good. I am guessing they are waterproof (since they were ammo boxes)? And great photos as well! Thank you!

cheers

probably your settings in your browser's internet options related to downloading pictures... there is a checkbox for "show pictures in web pages" or something like that.  make sure it's checked.

Hi.

My settings seem to be okay as well but I can't see the pictures.  Is there another link I can click on that will lead me to a site where I can see these pictures? I'm very curious how you did it.

Thanks.

I right clicked on the red X to get the link. I pasted that in my browser, but removed that portion that identifies the particular image, leaving just Metalhead's album name and link. It took me to  his album, but I only found four pics related to this topic there. Perhaps he removed the others from his album and forgot they would impact this posting. ???

+1 photobucket FAIL.

Has learned so far that..."complete" gaskets are never complete no matter where you get them, VHT Silver Case Paint is just as durable as painting your motor with chalk and cheap tire irons used with rim protectors are useless on 30 year old tires.

Not photobucket fail.  User fail.  Wykydtron deleted those pictures a long time ago.  It's unfortunate, too, because they would have been useful for a lot of people who want to do something like this.

I had my friend Jason weld up some boxes on my bike last week.

Obviously my bike is not pretty, but they work. Still not sure if I want to paint them or not.

Nice!  I say paint the rest of the bike to match the boxes. 8)

Do they interfere at all with opening the seat all the way?
