Is this a Good Buy????
« on: May 15, 2007, 02:19:30 PM »
I looks really good, but I'm thinking the price is a bit high for the mileage???

Don't get me wrong, 20k miles is not a lot, but the price just doesn't seem right.

Here's the scoop:

For sale a nice vintage Honda with original paint, exhaust and seat. New Dunlop tires, carbs cleaned and synced. New O-ring chain. Start good, idles good, runs good, everything works as it should. 20,000 miles. Buy it Now, with the riding season here and the price of gas on the rise, you could save part of the price just in gas money saved.Original owners manual, and tool kit. Too many bikes, the wife says sell some

Pictures are below.

Your expert advice is appreciated. I don't want to look like an idiot when I go to look at it.

I need to know what I should look for in mechanical issues besides what I look for in the SOHC-4's.

Thanks

LL

I was offered a bike just like that with 800 miles on it. In fact, I drove 40 minutes to go see it. It was dusty, but ran. The seller was hard up for cash because he was going through a divorce. He wanted two hundred...

So far this is what he said.

He's only had the bike since last fall. It wasn't running when he bought it and it didn't have turn signals or a headlight.

Doesn't know of any motor or trans work, but he thinks it doesn't cause theres no signs of fresh gaskets.

At least he's honest, but do you think it's a good idea to purchase this bike from what he's told me???

I really don't like the fact that he hasn't had it long. I think he might be a reseller.

$1900......... Do you think it's too much?

Thanks a ton

I'll second that 1900 is too much.  Way too much, unless the fuel tank is full of gold coins!

Early 750 DOHC had sprocket oil seal troubles and needed modding, check out the recent bulletin list posted by Glenn its one of the ones in the high 40's numbers

It's hard to tell just from the pictures. If it where in  tip top shape I'd give $1000 max for it.

If it is the year, make and color you pine for..buy it.
If you just want another one...cut the guy off at the knees, offer him less than half of what he is asking, if he says no...let him soak... you can alway go up on your offer, never down...have ca$h not a cheques, $100 blls work best!...have a truck/trailer,  ramp, ands tie downs when you go and look.  Take a buddy, ask him "well, what do you think?"  and throw in "Is this one as nice as the ('insert color here') one we looked at yesterday, with the Kerker header?"  I mean it is you money!  You would have went and looked at the 'other' bike if it did exist, right??!?  Sometimes it is hard to realize that the guys with money in hand to buy and older bike...are rare.  Even HDs, Triupmhs, and Hondas.  Lots of talk...and we know it walks...

Let us know how it goes!  Ride it...

I own several of these bikes.....

The main issues you want to look at is the charging system (expensive to fix), leaky valve cover, and top end noise.

There is really nothing special in terms of aftermarket parts on that bike that would warrent such a high price.

For a nice 750F I wouldn't pay more then 1500, for a cb900F 2500, and for an 1100F 3500.

Good luck,

Nice bike, but I wouldn't pay $1900 for it.  Maybe $11-1200...
