Ignition points cover gasket
« on: May 30, 2007, 05:35:46 PM »
What gasket do you guys use for the points cover on a CB750?

Those cork Honda ones seem to shrink very quickly, then just don't fit.

thanks

David

Clear RTV.  I made a point (ha ha) of putting some on the bottom of the heads of the screws too.

Then, after going through all that trouble, I noticed that there is a small (drain?) hole at the very bottom of the points area anyway, so the seal is not critical.  At least, that is the case on my 77 CB550.

I bought a sheet of cork about ten years ago from an auto parts store and made one.  The cork was thicker than the OEM stuff.  It is still in there and looked good when I had the cover off for the 3000 mile service a couple of weeks ago.

About 20 years ago, I got fed up with the cork gaskets.  Leaked and let water in during rain showers, one time use only.  I went to the hardware store and bought a thin sheet of neoprene.  With a #11 xacto blade, I cut a points cover gasket out of the neoprene.  No leaks and I'm using the same one I made 20 years ago.

I bought gasket material at the auto parts store and cut it to fit.  Just tell them what you want to use it for.  I had to buy a whole roll, but it was only about $9.00 for a synthetic/cork material, and it has other uses.

TT, did you notice the hole at the bottom on your 550s?  I guess water won't run UP into the points area, but it seems like enough riding in the rain might get water up there.  I didn't seal it up, as it seems Soichiro thought it was a good place for drainage or something.

Yes, I noticed the drain at the low point.  It stays open with the neoprene gasket.  But, water doesn't come streaming in from the front anymore.

Cheers,

It also provides someplace for the oil to drip out for those of us with a leaky points seal. ;)
