Help me ID this XS650.
« on: May 30, 2007, 08:39:42 PM »
Sorry the pic isn't clearer. I need to know what year this bike came with this color scheme.

Also, where on the frame is the VIN etc located?

This was one of those $50 boat anchors I need to figure out what to do with!

Thanks

      Hey Greg,
Check out 650motorcycles.com and you'll find alot of info on these. matter of fact, look at this one. It's a 72' XS650. Hope that helps.  Later on, Bill :) ;)

TLC? It needs tough love!  :D

Luckily my house is less than 100 yards away from a lake's edge, so if I really get frustrated with this pile of rusted bolts I can always roll it into the water! (actually it kind of looks like it was retrieved from that water as it is!)

Nope, that's a 1976 XS650. The 1972 was red/white and the first year for electric start -  a completely different looking piece.

I am a 650 nut...

Gordon, maybe it is a 76'. That one I posted, was "claimed" to be a 72' by it's owner over on 650motorcycles.com . Sure wish they would say if it is all original to specs and all. :-\

Sorry there Greg, looks like I was misled.

                                                    Later on, Bill :) ;)

Well, I went back and discovered that there was a 2nd picture on that post , and it was the 72'. Seems kinda goofy to have the title specify a 72' and then show a 76' followed by the 72' and never mentin the 76'. ::) Sorry bout' that guys.

                                                  Later on, Bill :) ;)

VIN is on steering head, right side. Should also have a sticker with year, etc.

Do drain the 'bike of all nasty polluting fluids and take the battery out before lobbing it into said lake....we wouldn't want to affect the local ecosystem, would we?

Actually, I'd love to have the engine, carbs, and wiring harness. Seriously - I still want to make my own chopper with a full, custom frame, springer front, phat tire rear, and something similar to the old Amen Savior frame's rear suspension (I'd have to have rear springs). I would never "wreck" one of the older, more rare 70~73 models - but these were made for 13 years and over 640,000 sold and the later ones are everywhere. The 650 Yamaha twin is one of the most symetrical and perfect motors that it's easy to showcase one in the "center" of a chopper frame. Chrome it up, polish it up, and there is no oil tank and the electrics can all be easily hidden away. They are torquey and they make plenty of power for an ill-handling bike - perfect application!

I was going to do this to the CB750 K4 I recently restored/hotrodded before deciding to make a period hotrod.

Yep, I'll gladly buy it from you as-is.

Gordon

BTW - there is also a serial on the engine, right down by the front mounts.  It matches the frame serial number if original.

I'd love to buy the rims off the bike - just the rims, cut from the hubs.  The later year 650's had factory alloy rims, and yours has them.

Let me know if that's doable.  I'd be eternally grateful, as would my XS650 project.

Bought one just like it in 1976...French Blue if I remember. I wonder if it was mine? Looks like a XS650C to me. Keep us all posted on how you will restore. You are so lucky!

      Hey Greg,

Are ya sure that the photo in your post and the one in mine didn't get switched? ???
Bet ya wish they were. ;D ;) Lots Of Luck with that one guy. Be sure to save the "Before"
photos if you're gonna embark on that one. ;) If you are like me, and go through one like that,
you're gonna want to keep it around for a while. 8)
