k1 clutch issue
« on: May 31, 2007, 10:01:22 AM »
Hi guys, I've got a 1972 K1 cb750 with issues. Issue one is the clutch. The clutch does not engage until the lever is almost fully released. I tried to adjust following the manual w/o any success. The bike shifts fine and gears don't grind but its a bit akward on take off. I'd like to get a better feel at the lever as I start out. Thoughts? Also it seems to run rich and easily fouls plugs. I cleaned and reassembled the carbs, made all the usual tuneup adjustments (valves, points, timing, etc). I'm wondering if it needs rejetting. Maybe somewhere along the way somebody changed em out. What are the stock mains and pilots for this bike and your thoughts on this issue as well. Thanks and safe rides for all.

On the running rich thing... How long have you had the bike? Is it running the stock airbox and exhaust? Check the air filter to make sure it is clean.

For the clutch... Assuming your clutch plates aren't toast.
1. Remove clutch adjustment cover.
2. Loosen the 10mm lock nut on the shaft that goes through the case. (The shaft the cable attaches to)
3. Take a flat head screw driver and give it about 1/8 turn.
4. Start the bike and check the clutch feel. If it is better, lock it down and put the cover back on. If it is worse, put the shaft back where it started then give it an 1/8 turn the opposite direction you did the first time.

You'll just have to play with it a bit until you get it where you like it.

Here's the skinny from Honda:

In regard to the plug fouling, a few questions we need to look at:

Is the bike in stock configuration? (4-into-4 Honda pipes? If they are, are they HM300 or HM341 pipes? Stock airbox? Stock air filter?)
Did you reassemble the carbs with an aftermarket carb kit or genuine Honda parts?
How does the bike behave?
Do you primarily do highway or stop-and-go riding?
Are you running the correct heat range sparkplugs?

All of this needs to be established before we get into jetting changes.
