Do I need to replace my head studs?
« on: June 02, 2007, 07:36:48 PM »
I just pulled the head and cylinders off my CB750 cafe project.  Someone mentioned to me that you always replace the studs when doing this.  I tried double-nutting them and backing them out, but to no avail.  Do I really need to replace them?

If you are talking about the cylinder studs general consensus says that these stock studs have a tendency to stretch with each torqueing and with increased miles and abuse. Stretching leads to leaky head gaskets. If you decide to replace them use after market heavy duty studs. Be careful when removing them so that you don't snap one off. Double nutting is a start only. Use a stud remover at the bottom of the stud &/or heat the block in an oven in addition to double nutting. Use a penetrating lube too. Be careful not to damage the case's mating surface with the stud extractor.
