Powder coat masking
« on: December 11, 2012, 03:49:23 PM »
What portions of the frame need to be masked? I'm thinking the threaded portions (ground point, etc). What about were the engine bolts go through the frame? Anywhere else?

Maybe the VIN tag if you can't take it off.  They make heat resistant tape that works great to mask stuff off.  I've also used silicon plugs which also work well.

Exactly, anyplace where the thickness of the paint will cause problems reassembling, threading or grounding. Watch the swing arm pivot points.   Easier to mask than sand off later.  Are you sandblasting 1st? If so, watch out for any VIN or stickers you want to keep.

A good powder coating company will/should mask off the areas for you.
Steering Stem
All threads an tapped Areas
Disassemble the swingarm So when it goes in the oven the grease doesnt leak on the new power
Holes where the rear brake lever linkage rod mounts
IMO its just easier to grind off the powder in your grounding points areas
Motor mount IMO not so much A tap with a hammer will push the bolts through
If your doing your triple trees Tape off the inside where the bars mount
