tire valves
« on: June 03, 2007, 01:29:26 PM »
I have two questions for u guys. First are there tubes in the tires on a 1975 cb750 with spoked wheels. I am losing air through the base of the valve stem. Is there any way to change the valve with the wheel on the bike. I really do not want to take the wheel off. I am trying to get the bike running good before I take the bike apart so I know where I stand with the motor. thanks!!!

Sorry, their tubed.  You'll have to pull the wheel to change the tube.  You could try just changing out the valve in the stem to see if thats your leak.

Leaking through the base of the stem means you have a punctured tube, that's just where the air can get out of the wheel as the spoke nuts are probably rusted airtight.
Get a good quality tube, Michelin or Pirelli are excellent. I've had poor experiences with no-name (China) tubes with wonky tire balance and bad valves.
I have patched tubes with hot vulcanizing patches (you clamp them on and light some stuff that burns a few seconds to melt the patch on) but I haven't seen them for years in stores. I don't trust glued patches on a motorcycle, flats are too frigging scary.
