Wife doesn't really want it in garage
« on: June 04, 2007, 06:36:00 PM »
A friend picked up a free 750Four.  Plate on the steering head says 11/69.  This is a wreck that would need a lot of work, and quite a few parts.  But, there's a rusty frame, front wheel and brakes, a complete motor and carbs, a few other bits.  Rear wheel is Harley (ugly, IMO).

BTW, the motor VIN plate is virgin; never been stamped.  ???  On the right side case is a California emissions plate with a VIN that matches the one on the steering head.

He wants to give it to me.  Not sure what to do with it.  The wife doesn't really want it in the garage, unless I can convince her that it's particularly worthwhile.  She's already anticipating my Triumph project going in there.

What do you all think?  What can you tell me about the bike and motor?

Thanks!

How bout some pics?

BTW, the little woman tried the same thing on me so put up an unattached four bay garage and I'm the only one with keys!
She's never even been inside it. I'm considering letting her in it though; The head could really use a good cleaning!  :D ;D ;)

Won't work.  We already have a garage, and my wife keeps her bike in there!  :D

get it. If you dont want it , there are plenty members here that would be happy to pay you for parts needed for their ko restoration(myself included) . As far as the missing numbers on the engine my 69 is the same way. i believe that it is a waranty engine replaced by the dealership for one reason or another.

Interestingly, mine is also dated 11/69 and no engine number. I've always assumed it was either an engine, or case replacement do to a holed case. I believe the earlier bikes had a 17T front sprocket and it caused problems in this regard.

It give you a long term project to say the least and you'll learn something from messing around with it. Hell, you could be real brave and just break it all the way down for easier storage or sell for parts. That's what I would do. : )

I had a friend who "Fired" his wife (his words), because she didn't like his surround sound system...this is a much greater issue! Just say "If you love me, you'll let me keep it!"....and I'll give it a bath, and take it for walks and feed it...honest! You won't have to do anything!"

Tell her the truth, this project is inspiring to you and makes you happy.  Perhaps offering up something to bring her just as much joy will help you in this.  ;)

If all else fails, get a storage unit and put it there until you are able to fee up some space in the garage.  Better yet, just give it to me (the bike, not the wife ;D) and you wont have to deal with the situation anymore.  ;D

Cases with no numbers is because the engine has been rebuit for some reason (usually chain throw) with NEW cases from Honda as spare parts.
Whoever does the job, be it dealer or private, is SUPPOSED to stamp the original engine number into the pad but Ce La Vie

I can't wait to see how my wife responds to all your suggestions.  Can't you all come up with anything more compelling?   ;D

The problem is, she knows too well that the Triumph project is waiting for attention, and doesn't want another bike just taking up space indefinately to no good purpose.  Besides, this will crowd *her* bike.   :D

         Hey medic,

a 69' 750 IS a Classic piece of history. Ya can't just turn something like that down! ;D I mean, think about it, a 1969 Honda CB750, 1969!.  No true vintage motorcyclist  , with the opportunity to rescue it, should be expected to turn it down. ;D ;) Think of the prestige! 8)

Something I learned from my divorce:

If it makes you happy, do it.  NOT doing what makes you happy will cause you more trouble with the wife in the long run.

This definately is *not* that kind of issue.  From my perspective, nothing like this is important enough to have a serious falling out with my wife.  She is far more important than any hobby.  If this was a values issue, it'd be worth a fight.  But similar enough values and notions of importance are part of why we're married to each other (well, okay that and I still get lit up by her even at our advanced age).

Having said that, owning a piece of history (no matter how flawed at the moment) may be pretty compelling... ;D

Sorry Medic, but the title of this thread makes it sound like you are terminally, pathetically whipped!  Perhaps it sounds worse than it is?

I could say that to win a war you have to pick your battles (very true, btw, though not always possible); but I like to think that we are an alliance.  That requires a certain amount of accomodation, and is worth it.  Besides, she wants some space in the garage to work on *her* bike from time to time.  That's the garage that she readily agreed is for the bikes, not cars; and suggested getting the Sears tool chest for; etc.  I have no cause to complain if I have to contend occasionally with a position that's not convenient for me.  We're talking about *stuff* here (can't believe I said that about a bike), not principles.

Now, anyone offer any more compelling arguments for this thing?   ;D

I always tell my wife that I am not working on a new bike that I can run to the dealership and get parts for. I try to explain that these bikes were not produced for the last 30'ish years and parts have to be purchased when they are available.
