After less than a week in jail, hotel heiress Paris Hilton has been released and reassigned to house arrest for the next 40 days.
After "extensive consultation with medical personnel," the tabloid favourite and notorious party girl has been "reassigned to our community-based, alternatives to custody program," Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, told reporters on Thursday.

Early Thursday morning, the Simple Life reality TV star was fitted with an electronic "ankle bracelet" monitoring device. She will be confined to her home for 40 days and will be under the supervision of the Los Angeles County probation department.
Whitmore cited an unspecified medical condition for Hilton's reassignment, saying that privacy issues prevented him from going into more detail.
"This is certainly not unprecedented. This happens from time to time," he said.
"It doesn't matter how we look … it just matters that we do our job."
He added that Hilton's reassignment was not an issue of overcrowding in the facility.
Earlier this year, the 26-year-old was sentenced to 45 days in jail for driving with a suspended licence, which violated the probation of her alcohol-related reckless driving case in 2006. The sentence was later reduced to 23 days.
On Sunday night, Hilton surrendered to police and was booked into the Century Regional Detention Facility, not long after making a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards earlier that day.
She was held in a special facility where she was separated from the general prison population and spent 23 hours each day in her cell.
Authorities consider that Hilton has already spent five days "behind bars," Whitmore said.
