I'm headed this direction for the Tracy build. http://www.yamiya750e.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=35_88&products_id=671

No one seems to have one of these X's installed with any dynos. ???

That's a nice pipe Derek, should look good on your shiny bike! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I liked the way the Yamiya pipe looked, but I have heard from several people that the pipe is fairly quite.  While I am not looking for the straight pipe sound, I definitely want a better melody.  I head one mounted on this guy buzzing around Mid-Ohio last year, but was never able to catch up with him to check it out.

So far it has been fun modifying this pipe.  If I had any welding skills the damn thing would be done, luckily my buddy Ohio Cafe Racer is going to help me finish her up!

Sounds like you got a pipe intended for a DOHC 750.  They have the same spacing and angle, but the head pipes are about 1.5" longer.  I know a couple people on choppers who have made the SOHC-DOHC or vice versa exhaust switch by adding or removing pieces of tubing.  If he's selling one system for a SOHC or DOHC, though, that's not exactly right because a DOHC system doesn't really fit a SOHC.  Maybe he just sent you the wrong one?

I doubt he sent me the wrong one as I have spoke with another member in Cali that had the same problem.  I took the pipes over to my brothers to try and fit them on my brothers 79 CB 750 SS and they were too short?

Fun project.......

Over the last two weeks we have done quite a bit of work on these pipes and I am fairly happy at this point.  A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to my buddies Greg (http://www.ohiocaferacers.com) and Jesse.  Let the journey begin:

When I first got the pipes they hung way too LOW!

Another Low Pic...

I wanted to use the original mounting spickets and star clamps to mount the X-Pipe.  Here is a pic of the of the first items cut off

Ends of the pipe flared

We used a couple pieces of flat bar to hold the exhaust in place

Let the cutting begin, we took an 1 1/2" out of the header (Greg in the first pic)

Pipes welded before grinding...

Hugging the frame

Still work left, but get a good idea what she is going to look like.  Greg fabbed a rear mounting bracket and we figured out how to use a rubber mounted strap.  Still need to pull the pipes back off, sand them down and then paint them.  THen wrap in header wrap and re-mount.....  Getting Close......

Yeah it does look good but with that poor fit, they should not really be claiming it fits a cb. A lot of work to make a system fit, I hope the performance is there.

Thanks for the complements!  It wouldn't have been that bad, except I am terrible at welding.  So fortunately I have great friends that have bent over backward to help me out.  Hopefully it turns out pretty cool and sounds great!

I am glad I got it, out of the exhausts that are available (and under a grand) I believe this to be the a neat option....  If I was doing the whole project over I may have spent the money and got the Swarbick (sp) exhaust and possibly stick with a true CR.....

i sent an email to the company and monty campbell about the problems and my concerns of buying one of his pipes, this is his reply.

jeff,

Thanks for the link.

You have some very intuitive people on that forum.

They were correct; that system was designed for the DOHC 750/900/1100 (MX1-H4).  Not the SOHC 750 (MX1-H2).  There is a difference in the length of the head pipe.

I must be terrible with people, because if someone had only asked me, I could have helped them out, & they would not have had to 1) cut the ends off of the head pipes (simply remove the spikots from the cylinder head & use 8 longer bolts), 2) they could have gotten the H2 system instead, & 3) I would have suggested that they install a remote oil drain plug before installing the X-PIPEtm exhaust.  With the spikots out, the head pipes, as they were delivered, fit the exhaust ports perfectly.  (I did get an email from a gentleman who tried to explain something about spikots and loose fitting pipes in ports.  I tried to answer his questions; to help him.  He said that his system was a UFO, so it could not possibly have been anyone in your forum.)

The fellow that said something about the midrange increase was spot on.

What they didn't say was that even a free 4into1 (UFO) is no bargain (even if it did work), because the time and materials for the jet kit alone costs more than my genuine X-PIPEtm exhaust.

If you visit one of my eBay listings for a Honda X-PIPEtm, I think that you will see that there is a separate system for the SOHC 750.  You should also note that I try to answer questions and make suggestions like the remote drain plug, see end of listing.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250260653029&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=015

I may not be a people person (maybe just a mad inventor?), but I try to help whenever given the opportunity.

I have learned to expect people to struggle with my design - not necessarily mechanically - but emotionally.  It is so different from your Dad's UFO, & you have been treated to endless/mindless/mindnumbing magazine BS that it will take anyone a while to see that in this case, at least, different can be a whole lot better.  And it is a whole lot better.

There is no way that everyone can accept my invention.  Just like I can't settle for a UFO.

Just a little story that you might want to forward to your forum friends:

When drag racing in the midwest, I decided to build the ultimate UFO.  I believed in scavenge and all the big name UFO makers - all the magazine lies.  I had built and raced many UFO designs at that point.  My engineering background from MU helped me do the math and made complex equations manageable.  So, after a few designs I felt that I was ready to make some serious improvements.  So, one day I decided that in order to enhance/increase scavenge, I needed to not only increase crosssectional area of the pipe (megaphone), I needed to figure a way to suck the heat out of the exhaust gasses, to make them contract, thus creating even more scavenge.  I was just sure it would work; cooling gasses always made their volume much less.

So, I built an all copper UFO.  I was so sure that I'd be selling hundreds of copper headers.

Opps.  It was a complete failure.  It ran like CR*P.

That is when I started looking in the opposite direction.  I realized that the opposite of scavenge was the real deal.  The electrical analogy would be - a UFO is DC (direct current), and my X-PIPEtm is AC (alternating current).  When I applied at the patent office for my patent, the head examiner of the exhaust group, a man with an aerospace engineering degree, became very upset emotionally about my exhaust design.  You see, every patent up until that point, every patent, anywhere in the world, depended upon scavenge and the more modern ones even went so far as to use anti-reversion devices (diodes) to keep the exhaust gases and even fresh air out of the exhaust port.  Patent Examiner Hart stated that my invention "defied all laws of known physics."  That was a proud moment for me.  I told him that I thought that is what inventing was all about; expanding the known universe of knowledge.  He didn't agree for 6 years, during which time he flooded me with patents from everywhere in the world, many not translated, some even from Hitler's germany.  Hart was relentless.

Finally, I made a video of the 3 phenominon unknown to the rest of the world.  I was able to demonstrate the 3 phenominon that made my X-PIPEtm kick ass.  I flew my patent attorney to Washinton, with me.  In Hart's art group, surrounded by his many examiner employees, I demonstrated the real physics to Hart.  At the end of the 3rd video clip, Hart threw his hands in the air and shouted, "I can't allow myself to watch any more of this!"  Then, he looked around to see that his many employees were stunned, staring at him.

He rushed us into his office.  He pulled out a book written by 2 British gentlemen.  He flipped it open to what appeared to be a well worn page.  There he held his book up to me, pointing to a air flow diagram,  He said, "That is how air is supposed to flow."

I said, "That diagram defies the law of conservation of momentum."

He looked back at the book and said, "You are right?"

I said, "If it is in the book, I didn't invent it, so I don't deserve a patent.  If it's not in the book, you won't give me a patent.  So, how do I get a patent around here?"

Hart said, "I can't give a patent of this magnitude to someone like you; you are just a greasey car mechanic.  If you were General Motors, or Honda, I could give you this patent."

So, you see, not only do I have a terrible personality, but I am also just a greasey car mechanic.  A greasey car mechanic that seemed to know at least 3 things that no one else knew.  Only because I made a UFO that was a complete mistake.

To test the result of one of my 3 theories, remove the baffles from my MX1 X-PIPEtm, let the engine idle as low as possible, now drop a small piece of paper behind one megaphone opening.  After several attempts you should see that the paper will usually be sucked up inside of one megaphone & be immediately blown out the opposite megaphone.  You see, reversion is good - scavenge is bad.  Quite the opposite of what our magazine friends have been telling us.

Think of all of those world wide patents, out of date and simply wrong all along.  Think of the man hours wasted and millions of UFOs cluttering up otherwise fine motorcycles.

Anyway, I hope that this helps you and that you will share some of this with your friends on the forum.

Thank you,

Monty Campbell

i am interested in your pipe for my 1974 honda cb750k, however i do have some concerns. a friend got one for his 750k and there were several fit problems, the pipe hung VERY low (pic included) requiring extensive modifications to make it fit. the pipe ends themselves were also apparently a loose fit in the head as well. the thread discussing this is -> http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=22600.0

Fuzzbutt, interesting reply from Monty.  Kinda a kick in the nuts though!  The pipe I ordered was for a 73 CB 750 Honda, I e-mail and talked with Monty several times before purchasing the pipe from him.  If he sent me the wrong damn pipe I am going to be pissed!  Pretty sure it said H-2 on the box, will check when I get home this evening.

The gentleman that he is talking about that complained is the owner of the black CB 750 pictured either earlier in this thread or in my build log.  I did not call or e-mail him as I have owned the pipes for 2 years and expected little to no help from him.

Funny thing is, I did take my F'N spickets off & used his collars to mount it and the damn thing still hung almost 2 1/2" lower than the bottom rails?  I could have mounted it with the collars he provided, but decided it looked cheap, and I wanted to use the original system with the star clamp especially after I had them powder coated.  I am in too far now to turn back...

Last night I sanded the pipes down and am getting ready to paint them this evening, pictures to follow.

Thanks scondon for the compliment, I can not take all the credit as Greg from Ohio Cafe Racers helped me cut them and weld them back together, and buddie Jesse helped come up with the ideas.  Not to mention the Midas shop around the corned who flaired the pipes for free (gave the guy a tip though).

The pipe is pretty damn close to the oil drain bolt.  I am going to wrap the pipes so that it is fairly easy to remove once a year (doubt this bike will be my beater) to change the oil.

bgfootball, the pipe I bought was listed for a "SOHC CB750" and hangs exactly the same as yours did. I highly doubt it was a shipping error that caused you to end up with the pipe you did, rather an omission of facts on the part of Dr. Campbell.

My instructions read to tap in a screw to #1 and #4 to hold the collector in place so that it can be removed for oil draining. Doubt that that would be an easy task once the collector has had 2,000 miles of exhaust pumped through it and would rather have it welded anyway. Wonder how much oil would drain from one of the access ports under the crank and whether they are accessible with the x-pipe installed.

Maybe Greg would like to do another and get $$$ for it. When I get some free time and $$ I'll shoot him a mail :)

Good work on those pipes mate, it's a pity you had to cut and shut them to make them fit though, that put me off them, and like you, I could make them fit, but hell, they should fit out of the box!

Are the mufflers kind of pointing downhill now? I think it'd look nicer if they were kicked up a tad? Also the headers seem to sit a fair way out from the front of the engine, or is that just an optical illusion? Cheers, Terry. ;D

They do fit a bit further out up front Terry, at least mine do. My first thought at a fix was to have a local shop bend the headers a bit more at the top which would swing the rear up and tuck the pipes closer in down by the filter housing. If that's even possible. Pipe would still hang low up front but be swept up in the rear

was it an h-2 on the box? inquiring minds want to know. assuming that this x-pipe is indeed better, there will be a kerker going up for sale in the next few weeks. i just ordered an x exhaust.

I was waiting to post the results until I had finished painting (did it today) and wrapping the exhaust with header tape tom. morning.  Not to mention that I was too FREAKIN PISSED to post the results.  Than SOB sent me the wrong GD Exhaust!  It was clearly marked H-4 on the box what a damn POS.  Oh well the worst is already done.

The pipe is level now, I do not think the exhaust sticks out too much in front...  The new VHT engine block gloss black looks a hell of a lot better than the paint that come on them.

Here is the finished product and the steps that I took getting there:

HERE IS THE KICK IN THE NUTS PIC

Prep for paint

Products Used  (straps suck, would suggest using metal zip ties or just safety wires)

Paint in progress

Did not get any picks wrapping the pipes, the process was too messy....  Finished product

I hope she sounds wicked now!  Can not wait to crank her over for the first time.  Still a few weeks away (just do not have enough time to finish quickly)...
