What RPM's are you riding at?
« on: June 04, 2007, 08:48:20 AM »
A while back my bike died on me and the battery was dead.  After reading up I discovered that the charging system does not kick in untill you are running over 3k RPM's.  Before I knew about the charging system I rode at 2.5k, of course that was short lived.  Now I seem to be at 3.5k to 4.5k.  I see that the "red" area does not start until 8 or 9k. So that got me wondering, what RPM's are you ussually running at?

I keep them above 3,000 for not only battery charging but alos for engine braking. You also get better throttle response since the torque band starts in that area.

Idle to 2.5k when riding thru a sleepy neighborhood or when you see a cop,  ;)
3k to 6 k for normal cruising
REDLINE on one wheel standing on the seat when there are babes in the area!  8)
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

This surprises me somewhat...... I'm ussually above 3500 unless i've stopped at a trafficlight. And when i'm out of town I'm closer to 7000 a lot of the time. My 550 is just not that powerfull under  5000. On the freeway i'm mostly cruising at 6000.

I suppose this explains why my milage is so bad compared to what i've read here ;D

That sounds about right for the 550.

This question comes up occasionally, and I always say it depends entirely on many different factors.  Type of road, traffic conditions, what mood I'm in, etc, but in town I tend to keep it between 3500 and 4000rpm, and on the highway it can be anywhere from 6000 to Redline depending on if I'm feeling saucy or not! ;D

I really need to count the teeth on my sprockets, because seriously, I'm at or below 4.5k at 75ish MPH.
No.

Either that or you need to check the accuracy of the Tach and Speedo! ;D

What's the normal rpm at say, 70mph, for a stock geared/sprocketed cb750?
No.

Yesterday I was running at 75MPH at 5K. Now that is my Speedo and Tach. Can't swear they are balls on.

Mine, K0, with stock gearing/sprockets is 15 mph per 1000 rpm in top gear.

75 750F0  Stock gearing 17/48 with a 120 rear 5K = 70mph

cb750 K5
Same as above ....
also ... earlier today I was doing 110 at 7.5k

probably could have been 112-115...
but I was going up about a 3% grade hill,
and wasn't fully laying down for the aerodynamics.

On average acceleration I like to get it up at least past 4k
(see above about the power band thing)
but once I hit the speed limit (40mph+) I usually just cruise in 5th

Very rarely do I ever speed... but I think it's good for the bike (and the rider) to occasionally open it up.

oh and that would be with stock sprockets .. 18/48

1000 rpm for every 10 mph seems to be  a good rule for me.
