Dyna ? no Honda
« on: June 11, 2007, 06:21:14 PM »
This isn't on a honda but it may be useful to find the problem in
case I experience a similar symptom some day with my Dyna S iginition.

A friends bmw 77 100RS has a Dyna 3 on it.
It has some kind of control box, other than that seems just like the
Dyna S with dual coils and dual magnetic pickups.
Bike all of a sudden died on him just as he pulled in last week,
now it will crank up and run until it gets warm and then just
quits. There is no spark when this happens.
What do y'all think?
I'm trying to find a manual to go with his ignition (it was on the bike when
he bought it 17 years ago).

I've seen coils break down after they warm up an quit, then when they cool down start working again.

Yea, I think I've heard of that just never experienced it first hand.
Would one coil breaking down kill the engine?
That's what had me puzzled since it quit altogether and didn't try
to run on one cylinder. We'll pull the tank and trace some wires
one evening this week. I guess the way the coils are wired could
allow one to fail and kill the engine eh?

Thanks.

It is safe to assume that something is heating up. It is most likely not the pickup coils, it is probably the control box. You may be able to bypass that box and see if the situation improves.

Do you have one of HondaMan's little black boxes?  It could very well be the control box heating and something failing in it.  The one engine I had a coil fail on was a 5hp B&S engine, would sputter like a fouled plug then die.  Can you open the control box?  Bad solder joints can fail under thermal expansion as well if there is any type of socket that doesn't have a lock can "chip creep"

That sounds like a good place to start Gents.
I just found a installation instruction for the MotoGuzzi running the same
system. The box was indeed an add on offered by Dyna to improve spark
at higher rpms. We'll check and see if it can be removed from the equation.
Thanks. Robert

Have you contacted Dyna? (hated to even ask that). I'm running the Dyna III. I thought I saw something on their site recently that made me think the Dyna III might still be available.

If you can't get r134a, you could try a can of air that is used to clean computers.  Turn it upside down and it will frost the nozzle.

Rock, you have gotten some good advice. If the box is under something you can blow a fan on it, of it does not fail you know here the basic problem is. Try not to get frost on the innards using the R134, you can get a moisture problem.

A CO2 fire extinguisher will do the same (and be much safer).
