Anyone clear coated their own tank?
« on: May 09, 2007, 10:32:58 AM »
with spray cans?

I would take it somewhere, but places are gonna charge upwards of $75 just for clear-ing a tank ??? >:(

I'm pretty much finished with the body work and going to apply the base coat and checkered decals tonight.  I'm a little hesitant to apply one myself mainly because:
1.  I don't want it to come out yellowy
2. Don't know if the clear coat will adhere to the decals and paint
3. I've never had too great of luck applying clears

Thoughts?

The base coat I'll be using is ~$10/can automotive paint, so I can't afford to screw it up!!

In my opinion you are better off just paying someone to paint/clear your tank and be done with it.
I have been fighting with the finish on my new CB750 tank for about two weeks now. With the money I have spent in spraypaint and bondo alone I could of had a pro shoot it  ::)

Getting dropped off at the bodyshop tonight for a nice, simple, single stage paintjob..

Yes - Canadian Tire Motomaster Clearcoat over same brand color base. Easy, smooth application  and good adhesion over paint and pinstripes.  However...  after 2 months curing time, a single drop of gas on it will instantly dissolve  it into a gooey mess.  Worthless and a waste of time and money. Check your product carefully.

There's a two part clear that's been posted on here before.

If you're going to do it yourself, it seems to be the way to go.

hate to say it, but 75$ to have it done is really a good deal.  I've yet to hear of anything that comes out of a spraycan that can take gas spills, UV rays and the occasional scratch very well.     You might try a place like MAACO or Earl Scheibs.... something like that - maybe you can bribe one of the painters to spray it when they are clearing something else......
No prep work for them, just 5 minutes with the gun....
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Hi moduleum
where did you find your checkered decal kit?
Looking for an alternative to Carpy's.
need to do both tank and seat and at 40$ per kit X 2 ,  I thought it's a bit steep.

Grazie mille
