Stuck splitting the case on an '82 cb650
« on: June 27, 2005, 10:23:22 PM »
I'm baaack...  with another problem of course  ;D

I'm down to the last step of splitting the engine case to clean out any metal shavings that might be inside there, but I've gotten stuck on the alternator rotor.  I have the thing separated, all the bolts out, but it seems to be getting caught just behind the alternator.  Now, I've done a search through the archives about this, and learned that you *possibly* don't have to remove the rotor to crack the case.  But in every response that said this, they never explained what was holding the case together that's behind the rotor!

I've tried lifting from behind, jimmying with it, applying even pressure, with no results.  And I know it's not an external bolt (or internal one for that matter) because I can get a good half-inch of clearance all the way around before it seems to lock up, with even more clearance from the rear end.  Any suggestions on what to do, or will I have to take the rotor off after all?

Thank'ee

Hate to do it, but...

*bump*

I'd really rather not have to pull the rotor off, since I don't want to risk damaging it in the process.  Any suggestions?  Even from other bike models and years... I'm desperate!

I have no idea what to tell you but here is the best lemonade recipe you will ever find.

1 1/2 cups FRESH lemon juice  (about 8 lemons)

boil 1/2 cup of water and stir in 1 1/4 cups of sugar stir untill sugar is dissolved

mix the sugar water with 5 1/2 cups of cold fresh water

combine lemon juice and water

grate 1 or 2 tablespoon fulls of lemon rind and add it to the mix.

I make mine in a gallon water jug and shake like hell.

Get out the lawn chair and fill a glass with ice, pour in 1 or 2 shots of GOOD vodka and a 1 or 2 cups of Ice cold lemonade..... stir

I remember a greenspun post where someone had to take the rotor off which was contrary to what he read in his manual (clymer??)
According to the shop manual I count 6 bolts on the upside, 21 bolts bottom side and 1 inside (Rotor side, near where the oil strainer is supposed to fit in).

So, if you have 28 bolts removed (and the PO hasn't cemented the crankcase halfs using Hylomar or something) I'd guess there's not much left what could hold it together.

The workshop manual says the rotor has to be removed (+ oilfilter, oilstrainer, oilpan, oilpump, cyl. + pistons, clutch, gearshift linkage, starter, advancer, pulser, primary shaft....guess that's all  :o )

Hah, that's about right, Robert.  I can get the cases separated but it just won't come loose from around that rotor... it's the only part that I haven't taken off that the manual suggested (mostly cause I had to have a flywheel puller).

Oh well, guess all those greenspun folks were wrong and I'm gonna have to invest in a puller after all.
