Next Project? What do you think?
« on: June 11, 2007, 08:29:58 AM »
So I was looking at Craig's List on Thursday when I saw a cheap bike for sale not too far from my house.  I e-mailed the guy and he let me know he had a few people coming to look at it Thursday evening, he would let me know if someone purchase it.  I took Friday off to do some house work and at 2 p.m. took a break for lunch.  I was checking e-mail and saw it was still available, I hooked up the trailer and went to the bank.  I am now the proud new owner of:

1979 Suzuki GS 1000
clean title, 18,000 miles, everything is there besides one of the emblems for the side covers
currently does not run, pretty sure it is just the battery, wiring looks clean, usual rust for sitting for quite a while

Bike will need a paint job and cleaned up, but overall a pretty nice ride with a ton of extras including a clean set of extra carbs, tour packs, six pack rack, rear luggage, cup holder, manual, sprockets, oil filters for three oil changes, new tach and speedo cables, grips, windshield among other things.

Anyone have any experience with these machines?  Good bike?  Thoughts???  The wife think I am crazy (more crazy now)....

Great bikes. I had it's baby brother, a 750. The engine is pretty well indestructible if maintained correctly. The only suspect area on Suzukis of that era is the electrics, especially the charging system.

I have heard that about their charging systems.  I read somewhere about people using Honda parts to cure this?  Any good resource boards besides GS Resource that are out their?

Doubt I event start messing with her until I have the CB750 complete and running like a top.  I take that back, I will probably clean the inside of the tank and seal it in the next week or two?  The more I read about the GS1000, it looks to be like a pretty good bike to mess with!  Nice little project....
