Anyone else following Tulsa time capsule opening?
« on: June 15, 2007, 07:16:32 PM »
Today they are digging up and opening the time capsule buried 6/15/57 that included a new 1957 Plymouth. Speculation is running high concerning it's condition.

I had heard about it and about the 57' Plymouth. I wanted to see how the car looked after being buried so long. :o  I remember when those came out. ;) Whoops! ::) There I go, showing my age again!
Can't help it though. Besides being a bike nut, AND a Mopar Nut, I'm just a nut about the old cars and trucks too! 8) I think the first new cars I remember seeing was 54' models. Back then, it was a big deal the general public didn't see the new models )or even hear anything about them until a certain date ( in Sept., I think) They'd show them on tv first and deliver them to the dealers, covered up. Sure is different now days, huh? How many others are old enough to remember that and will admit it? ??? ;D

Oh, I rember.  I was only 4 in '57, but whn I got a little older, my brother and I would visit the Ford and Chevy dealerships in town, watch the new cars as they came off the transport trucks, and then gather brochures on all the new Buicks, Chevy's and Fords.  Take the literature home and plaster the bedroom with cutouts from them.  That was also the day when you could look at a new car and actually SEE a difference in the styling change for each year.  Can't do that now, Toyota's and Nissans look like the Fords  :-\  Can't tell what brand of pickup truck you're following either.

Here's the update:

The vault leaked, and had several feet of dirty water in it when they opened the vault.  Apparently, the vault had been full of water at one point.  It seems that careful packaging saved the car from damage caused by the weak vault.

I know it's just me, but it reminds me of Geraldo breaking into Capone's vault.  A case study in hype. ;-)  But fun, nonetheless.

Here's a few pics.

I wonder what the winner of the thing is going to do with it.  It'd make a good museum piece, thats probably about it.

I think the whole thing is pretty dang cool, to see what 50 years of sitting in water does to car.
