Ow, my achin' ...
« on: June 25, 2007, 12:25:55 PM »
So I went for my first long-ish ride since buying my bike (~200 miles to the Maryland Seashore and back).  I found the seat pretty damn uncomfortable.  After the first 100 miles, some discomfort set in and by the end of the ride I was just hammering it to get home asap and get off the thing.

Any thoughts from the collective?  I've bought some memory foam and I'm thinking about shaving off the top inch or so of whatever is on there now and replacing it with the memory stuff then recovering.  I'd like to hear what other's have done though.  Do others have this problem, or is it just me...  I did have a car accident that really did a number on my tailbone.  And a bicycle accident on a mountain pass at 40mph.  And probably some other stuff I've blocked out.

What's the riding position on the bike? Ideally you should have a good spread of weight distribution between your hands, butt and feet. Handlebars too high will throw more weight onto your tailbone. Ditto footpegs too far forward. (Hence the 'relative' discomfort when riding a cruiser for long distances.)

The standard riding position for our bikes, with European spec bars, should give a moderately comfortable riding position with comfort to last at least between fill-ups. Personal 'tender bits' notwithstanding, of course!

Yeah, I pondered that too.  I replaced the mini-apes with a daytona bar with a ~3" rise.  The footpegs are in the stock location (no rearsets or anything like that).  Position-wise, it all feels pretty natural.

All my bikes cause this problem for me. HD, Honda, Duc, doesn't matter. I get monkey butt after about 100 miles.

PS. FWIW I had a Corbin seat on my VFR800, which transformed the bike into a mega mile comfortable ride.

I wonder if Corbin make seats for sohcs....??

Doesn't look like it:

On my cafe', The pegs are in the stock position, and by moving my feat back to right abuot mid way between the driver and passenger pegs, my back feels better.

Take it for what it's worth. Every body is different.

I use an Airhawk cushion (http://www.shapefitting.com/category.aspx?categoryID=54).  They're expensive but I decided to put the scratch down after reading a few reviews (http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/accessoriesandgear/motorcycle_seat_comfort_pads/ or http://motorcycles.about.com/library/userreviews/ucrevacc007.htm).  It absolutely helps and I can (and do) ride all day without any major discomfort.
