need help with a front end swap
« on: June 24, 2007, 09:05:07 AM »
im swaping a complete front end off of a 78 CB750F to a 76 CB750F to gain the dual discs and also becuse i like the wheels better then my rusted spokes.
i need help with the rebuild of the shocks and a sorce for parts.  i want to upgrade the front end bearings in the way hondaman said but dont know where to buy the parts
also ive never rebuild front forks.  is there somewhere i can get a manual or something to help?  what do you guys think about the progressive springs that dynoman sells?
thanks for any help

Jag,
I've just about finished with my front end swap, but used a GL1000 front vs the CB750F you're using.  I'm not familiar with Hondamans thread, but me and several other members here have used the All Balls tapered steering bearings.  I think I bought mine from Chaparral or Dennis Kirk (can't remember exactly).

Regarding the forks, I took them apart and cleaned everything and installed new fork seals and Progressive springs.

However, I cannot vouch how any of the above works at the moment because my project is still on going.

Here's a link to my project thread, maybe there will be some info in it that can be useful.

Good luck!

The All Balls tapered bearings are roller bearings.

Hi Jaguar,

I bought a set of dual rate fork springs from Works Performanace.  I called them up directly and got great customer service.  I think I paid about $125 for the kit in December 2006.  Like xTalon, my project is still ongoing, but within the next month or two I hope to be able to ride it.  I'll let you know what my impressions are of the kit.  I'm collecting parts for a dual disc conversion up front but am not doing a complete front end swap.  I wish you well on yours.  I too have the All Balls tapered steering bearing head kit as well.

Prost!

Jaguar:  I just recently did what you are doing for the most part.

I bought a 78 parts bike and swapped the rims/dual disc and shocks into my 76F.
My first question... is there anything wrong with the forks? Have you taken them apart, is something broken?

I took the ones I got apart, cleaned out some crap in the tubes, repainted them , replaced the fork seals and put them back together with fresh oil and they work very well. They are not as complicated as the older forks and to me, seems like there is much less to go wrong with them.
As for parts, www.partsnmore.com or www.oldbikebarn.com have been good for me.
I used a local bearing vendor that I use for work to get replacement wheel bearings (very common standard size bearings are used)

And unless you know the condition of the brake system, I would rebuild the master cyl at a minimum and open everything up to make sure any 'crud' is cleaned out of the system. Last thing you need is to not be able to stop :)
