I have been wondering about this too  - A VFR400 makes about 55BHP and weighs 170KG VS CB750's 260 odd kg's.  I think I would struggle to keep up with a CBR250 on a twisty road.  But hey thats not why I bought it.
I learned a valuable lesson about HP and bike riding from Bugsy Mann himself, when he came through our little local racing circuit one day in the early 1970s. He was just passing through with a friend, and went to see a local race. Someone loaned him a street-stock CL350 with those squared-off "street" knobbies and he ran in a qualification heat with our local hotshoes, who mostly rode modified 500/650 Triumphs, 750 Nortons and one 750 Harley.

...and he beat them all by over 100 yards in 10 laps of the 1/2 mile track....and then he complimented the bike's owner on keeping it so nice and well-tuned.....

Moral: don't let 1/4 mile times or raucous acceleration scare you away. I've taken many 850 and 900 BMWs, 1000 Kaws, Suzy 1100s and Yamaha 1100s in the Rockies with my 750. When the road's not straight, it's about HOW to ride....

I hear what your saying there hondaman - I just  don't have enough talent to make up for  the horsepower in the twistys!  Might be able to pick off the odd newby though  ;D

my helmet i ordered is on backorder anyways so i couldnt get much riding in even if i had the bike.

I'd wager you're better than you think: you'd just need a day in training and to remember the old motto of bikers and skiers, "Every turn can teach a new lesson."   ;)

As a practical matter your new bike properly tuned and tweaked will have all you really need to have. You will not outrun a crotch rocket even down hill. Your CB will keep up nicely with any almost any big twin. I had a thing for a HDs a few years back so I went Harley hunting for a while. Their torque will take you out of the hole, and you will pass them since our motors are really pulling while they are busy shifting. What you will find is that on local roads you have enough power to not shift up and down all the time. Getting onto a Highway you will probably crank it in 3rd up to 70 which is easy, and then just go right into 5th. You will have passing power even in 5th. What more do you really need. It is a great all around bike. Make it look nice and it will be admired.

My 1st 750 was a 71 with a 900cc kit,cam and 4 into 1, would run 13.00 secs at just on 100 mph in standing 1/4 and 131 mph at the flying 1/4. Was quicker than my mechanics new 900 Bol-d-or which miffed him no end.

This is a joke, right? ???

Entire auction description:

CB750 has bean up grade it will do 180 I like fase bike so needs some crab work.. "

Maybe he means when you get to the top of a hill, you can turn it around and go back down again.  That's a pretty useful feature.

I called my local bike shop and asked them if they'd do some crab work for me, and they said I'd have to take it to Maryland, so no fase bike for me  :'(

I have no idea what the top of my '76F is like, but for a novice like myself with a nagging sense of mortality, it pulls mighty hard.

I've gotten her up to around 90 going up a grade a 1/4mile long before I realized I was running out of nerve alot faster than the bike was running out of power.

Was young (16) and didn,t know much about gearing back then, it was quite high geared though. A whole heap faster than the TY175 trials bike i traded on it.

Well I guess the CB750's are fast enough to get you to the crash site a bit faster then you would enjoy.
