"Factory blemished" electronic ignitions available. Ow.
« on: June 15, 2007, 08:50:51 PM »
Well, the machine shop dinged up some of the heatsinks for the Dyna-capable Transistorized Ignitions I'm building. So, I will have a few that will basically get the heatsink part for free, if you don't mind having some scratches on yours. It will save $4 off the cost of the module.

Here's a pix of the damaged ones: the one at the bottom is a "perfect" one, the others show damage. If you hide your module, like I do, no one will ever know....let me know by PM if you want one like this.

Hi H'man,

I don't care whether the box is blemished or not - it won't make a difference to the performance will it ??

that's if you haven't already built mine....

note: I also spoke with stevek0 last weekend - he is comfortable with getting mine posted with his requirements - we will handle any costs involved with the postage issues within OZ....

Thanks, 750: I'll send yours like that. They don't look real bad or anything like that, just not perfect.

I'll be building the fancy gold one for Steveko this week, so I'll be ready to send them all in a bunch to Oz later this week (2 stockers and a Dyna gold for Steveko, and your Dyna). I'll build up yours with the "slightly blemished" heatsink this weekend. I just finished Hotrod101's similar "blem" unit today, will start on yours next, then Steveko's fancy one on Sunday/Monday. Might even build my blue one along with his gold one. I hope to repaint my bike in a blue metalflake this winter, if I can find a better left side cover (or make one).

This Dyna/Accel design has turned out real well, running barely warm to the touch after 8 hours. Should last for many, many years.

What are these ignitions you're making? How much they cost? What do they do and how to they compare to the Dyna S setups? Might be interested.

Cadunkle:
Take a look at the thread: search for "Transistorized ignitions". I developed them for SOHC4 riders, but they will fit and run any Japanese or German 2-points engine with negative ground and points. The advantages are:
1. Your points will last for a very, very long time.
2. If the electronics ever does fail, you can switch the wires back to the points in about 5 minutes and be back on the road, running on points. But, I give a 5-year warranty with the units, no hassles: you break it, I'll repair or replace it, period.
3. Installation is very simple: you mount the unit under the battery, unplug one coil's black wire and plug in the electronics, then plug the coil into that black harness. Ground the green to the points plate, plug the yellow and blue into the points and the orange and violet into the coils, all right by the right rear of the engine, and hit the road.

They come in 2 "flavors" unless you want a custom one: they come for stock Honda coils or for the hi-performance Dyna or Accel coils. Custom units come in a pretyy, anodized colored aluminum enclosure, either gold, blue, red, green, silver or black. These are a little more expensive, typically about $10-$11 more because of the cases.

The "plain Jane" units for stock Honda coils are between $61 and $64. The Dyna-compatible units are $64-$68. The differences depend on the price of parts as I build each "batch" of 10 units, so it varies slightly. And, I have a few "blemished" heatsinks, a little scratched, that can be used to reduce the cost of a Dyna-type unit about $4.

Let me know if you want one: you can e-mail me at mgparis@concentric.net.
Oh, one more thing: I donate $1 from each one back to support this SOHC4 site.

Oops.   :-[  The ones for stock Honda coils are $61 and the ones for Dyna are $68 with "perfect" heatsink or $64 for one that is a "blemished" heatsink. You can PayPal, if you have an account, to me at  mgparis@concentric.net . Or, some sort of money order from Oz?

750goes:  Maybe send $4 for shipping? I'll let Steveko know you're "sharing" it with him. I'm going to ask him to send me $20 for shipping, and will refund back to him if it costs less. When I've sent the test units to Terry recently, it has cost about $16 for a single unit.

Thanks!

I sell the NEW Dyna S ignition with NEW Dyna coils for $250.
 Daniel

DG: these units were developed here at SOHC4 for the guys who wanted to have electronic ignitions with "backup", in case the electronics ever fried. With this unit, you just unplug it if it fails and plug the points back in. It's a different philosophy for electronic ignition, which makes the points last for many years, and costs about 1/4 to 1/2 as much as Dyna.

And, it comes with a 5-year, no hassle warranty.   ;)

It isn't as "pretty" as a Dyna, unless you order one with a custom gold, blue, red, silver, green or black anodized case, but oh, well...

OK, I am a little confused (it's not hard to do  ;)).  Are these used in place of points?

HondaMan, correct me if I'm wrong.

As I understand the system, it still uses the points as the switch for the electronic ignition without putting all that voltage through the points, (bypasses the condensers?), therefor extending the service life of the points.  The big plus as I see it is if this electronic ignition fails :'( on a trip, you just hook the stock ignition back up and off you go ;D.  5 year warranty doesn't hurt either ;D ;D ;D

not considering the piece of "bulk" plug wire I see in the pic, Z1 sells the coils and the ignition for 120 each, for a total of 240.  Add 16 bucks for Dyna wires.  ;D

If it was a hijack, I would have posted something like" Hey, you can do the same thing with a GM HEI ignition module, like in this link"

so... I still have to get my cb550 on the road, let alone modifying it :)
but do upgraded ignitions help with performance, response, or efficiency on an otherwise basically stock (pod filters and mac pipe) 550?  If so, how much?  Or is this more for reliability?

What most of us have noticed is:
1. More even throttle response across the RPM range: stronger at the top and idle.
2. A little better MPG: mine increased about 3-4 MPG.
3. Cooler running.
4. Better starting and less cold-bloodedness.
5. ...and, points last a long, long, time.

I'll take that last blemished unit, if you wouldn't mind.  I am running a stock '72 750 with stock coils.

My only question, though, is how does one time this thing, or does one even need to?

Hi, Tim;
Sorry to miss your posting, been busy building ignitions and swingarms.
