Can I put 550 forks and triple on a 750?
« on: June 16, 2007, 06:12:46 PM »
After reading some old posts I get the impression that I can, but I don't think anyone has come out and said it.  I understand that the forks will be shorter (I'm totally OK with this because I'm a short guy) but is there a difference in strength?  I don't want to find out the forks wont be strong enough while flying down the interstate doing a million miles an hour.  ;)

Thanks!

Physicaly strong enough but you will have to use the 550 disc and caliper mount as the disc is smaller, and the springs may well be softer so the handling might suffer

Hmm, I don't think I like that idea.

Not sure how a 550 brake will slow down a 750... There's a bit off weight on a 750, so you'll have to get 2 disks at the front at least.

From what I understand (mostly from discussions here about swapping the GL1000 front end onto 750s) the 500/550s steering stem is not compatible with the 750s headstock.  If the forks are both 35mm then you should be able to keep the 750s trees and slip in the 550s forks.  Overall, I don't see too much logic to this swap however. . . . .

LOL!  :D

I have a set of polished 550 forks that are not on my 550.  It would be nice to put them on the 550, but I would like even better to have polished forks on my b750 project.   ;)

Yea, I know.  I should just learn to polish them myself.  Maybe that's what I'll do today.  Learn to polish, it can't be that hard.

Polishing aliminum is easier than you think and very rewarding.

Soon you'll be looking for parts to polish and concidering polishing parts that you never thought you would.

There's a thread by greenjeans   http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=19789.0  that has some good information on polishing.

Great Fathers Day activity! A couple of beers later and your forks will look like show items.

Cheers

The most important thing to remember when polishing is to rake out your buffing wheels often.

Metal particles stuck to a wheel can make a real mess of things.

I like emery cake first, tripoli second, white rouge third and red jeweler's rouge last.

I also use a different wheel for each step.

Where do I buy this, Home Depot?
