In my case is was a chafed spot in the insulation running to the nuetral switch, where it bends to fit around the lower engine case. There is a somewhat sharp corner there and it can get nipped while reinstalling the engine.

The light is switched on the ground side of the circuit with battery power being fed to the bulb all the while the key is turned on. Any time you get a short to ground in the neutral switch wire the bulb will light up.

Someone posted a similar question a while back and, since I have the same issue, I kept a few tips in mind. The N light switch has a little ball at the tip that slides into a depression on the gear selector shaft. If the switch is not full up and in place, this will cause the light to stay on all the time (Depressing the ball causes the light to go out - hence the depression allows the ball to rise and turn the light one). Someone had the problem that they couldn't get the switch to go all the way in and it turns out it was caused by the selector shaft being off just a touch in placement. I think it was either a slight push in or pull out that did the trick.

I still have to dive into mine. It's been one of those "When I get a roundu-it" projects. I'm still waiting for my "Roundu-it" to arrive.   ;)
