First bike, need some advice/opinions
« on: June 18, 2007, 01:13:45 PM »
Like the title says, this is my first street motorcycle.  I rode dirtbikes quite a bit as a kid, until I went thru the handlebars at 60mph and spent a few days in the hospital.  When I got out the folks had gotten rid of the dirtbike.  As of now, I've taken the MSF class and I have my license.  I have a jacket, gloves, goggles, and I'm looking for a helmet.

Anyway, I've always wanted to get a motorcycle, and my wife convinced me to sell our truck to generate the funds to pick one up.  I really like the look/engineering/reliability of the 4 cylinder CB's so that is what I've been looking at.  I'm not too concerned about engine size right now, I've been looking at 350's to 750's.  I think 750 would be kind of overkill for me right now though (and the one's I've seen are a bit outside my budget).  I'm not a mechanical idiot, but I've never worked on a motorcycle, so I need something that's ready to ride.  Plus, my wife and I are sharing the car now, so the sooner I can stop doing that the better  :P

So, here's the point of this post.  I found this CB400F Super Sport on craig's list:
http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/mcy/347776329.html
It's not as "classic" looking as what I've been looking at, but I think it could be good.  I'm hoping to get some more experienced opinions.  I'm in Tucson Arizona, and the bike is in Albuquerque New Mexico (6 hours), so I won't be able to see it in person until I have to decide whether or not I'm going to buy it.  Is this a good deal?  Is this a good model for me to be looking at?  It's going to be mostly for to and from work (city driving), but I would like to be able to take my wife around on the weekends (we're not too heavy, together we're under 300 lbs).

Any help is appreciated.

I'd say that $2,000 is a bit much. My gut says that you could probably do better.

Yeah, it does seem a little high.  The guy selling it said "price is negotiable a little bit but not much".  I'm going to talk to him on the phone tonight to see what I can learn.  What do you think a CB400 in that condition is worth, roughly?

Also, if anyone knows of a good bike for sale within ~600 miles of Tucson, AZ I'd sure like to know about it  ;)
