Newly rebuilt engine stuck every morning
« on: June 18, 2007, 03:31:47 PM »
Hi all :)

I just finished rebuilding my '75 gl1000 engine  (companion to my trusty '74 cb750) about 500 miles ago, and have run into an odd problem. Every morning, the engine is stuck and won't crank. I have to either hit the starter button a couple of times, or if its bad, stick in the kick starter and knock the engine loose. This is definitely the engine and not the starter. Once the engine is freed, the bike runs PERFECTLY for the rest of the day. Cranks freely, plenty of power, no odd noises, no overheating, etc etc. When I changed the oil for the first time at 200 miles, no pieces came out, and there was very little magnetic material residue on the oil drain plug. All the bearings (plain and ball) are new, and I plasti-gauged the plain bearings. Rings are new as well. Any ideas what in the world is happening or what I did?

Thanks all,

Jordan

Sounds like a combination of new and tight plain bearings, pistons and rings.  What type of oil are you using?

I'm using Rotella T 15w-40 (engine specs 10w-40).

I don't know Rotella.  Is that a mineral oil verses synth?  For engine brake ins, a mineral oil is recommended and you might check with a Honda service shop as to what oil weight they recommend for brake in.

 Just a thought,
Are you parking on main stand or side stand?
You didn't mention if it smokes after starting?
Try main stand and see if there is any difference ( maybe getting slight hydraulic lock on lower cylinders?)
