Remove covers from the engine. You can do this procedure w/ covers on engine in frame but you'll get better results w/ a little dismantling. Chemically zip-strip the factory clear lacquer, then etch them w/ hydroflouric acid (Mothers Wire Wheel and Chrome Cleaner) while rubbing w/ 000 steel wool then rinse w/ plenty of water. Now polish w/ 000 steel wool w/o adding any polish paste. You can give a final rub w/ 0000 if you want a finer finish. Use Penetrol as a polishing lube, which also works to rejuvinate nuts, bolts, plastic, metal, and frame paint. You can clear w/ Eastwood metal clearcoat in a rattle can, which will add some durability and will approximate the orig clear. Or leave the aluminum bare and rub once or twice a season. DEFINATELY wear HD rubber gloves and eye protection when using these harsh chemicals!
You will be more than happy w/ the results. I use this technique when I want to give the motorcycle a super-clean original "unrestored" look, which is compatable w/ original paint, chrome, gauges, spokes, nuts, bolts etc.
