BMW K75: what do you know about them?
« on: June 19, 2007, 08:16:23 PM »
There's a '93 for sale in the local paper with 16.5K miles on it, "excellent" condition, $2600.  I am very intrigued, my wife even said I should look at it if I am that interested....but I know little about them.  I did a Google search, and a Wikipedia article left me a little scared ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_K75), especially the part about second-hand owners being shocked by the repair bills.

Anybody familiar with these 3-cylinder K75s?

Don't use a big word where a diminutive one will suffice.

I always thought on all the BMW K bike that the engine was in the frame backwards.  When the bike is on the side stand, all the oil goes to the "top" of the engine.  And when I am able to see one start up, there's always a puff of smoke.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Try and find an owners forum like this one, or read through this

http://micapeak.com/reg/view2/K75   for insight.

The article says it all. At the very least I would want to know if the clutch springs are the upgraded type. If not, the bike is rapidly heading towards that $1000 fix-it bill.

If you are mechanically minded and can find a reliable source for parts, have at it. If not, walk away.

If the clutch springs are NOT the upgrade type, it may be a bargaining point.

The BMW is not a hard bike to work on, so unless there are some strange noises like something wants out, I'd grab it.

They are nice looking bikes for the most part, a few BMW models do leave me scratching my head though.

the only reason I don't own one is because I don't like shaft drive, owned one shaft drive, and rode a few others.

I'd find yourself a nice airhead.  I love my R75/6.

Indeed.

Though the price is skyrocketing on those, with no plateau in sight.
No.

Dad had a blue and pearly white one a long time ago. I can't say anything about it mechanically but he had it for at least a couple of years and as far as I know nothing went wrong.

It was very comfy - upright riding position.. The only bad thing for me as a pillion was that every time he braked I nutted the back of his helmet with the front of mine because of the sitting position, also not a good point for him I expect!!
Quite a nice looking bike though the pearly white was really nice when the sun caught it.
