Spark Plugs (this is a different question)
« on: June 24, 2005, 07:28:52 AM »
My bike has champion plugs in it. (I hate Champion except in my Dodge truck)  But they look to be new and I think they are burning
clean.  The outside has some black color to it and the electrodes are light grey and clean.  What is the correct factory ngk plug I need for this 78cb750k?  Are the plugs burning right, I looked at the clymers chart and if it was a car I would say it is right.

These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

NGK seem to make my metric bikes run the best.

But that could just be my imagination.

Champion tends to overengineer products, and on others it seems they fall through the cracks. Most auto mechanics will tell you champions are only good in mopar products.. put a set in a GM/Ford and deal with missfire problems forever.

Plus you have probably been using 810's.. or RA8HC's. The "R" designates its a resistor plug... but your plug caps allready have resistors in them.. giving you double resistance and in the end.. a weaker spark than it could be.

Run NGK D8EAs gapped at .028" in you SOHC Honda. Gap every plug with a round wire-gapping gage before you install it. The flat “key ring” gapping gages are NFG.

My 383 Dodge truck went from 6.8 MPG to 11.2 MPG with no other changes other than removing the still functional Champion plugs & installing NGKs. Even the knowledgeable Harley guys will tell you that HDs run better on NGKs than they do on the Champion manufactured HD OEM plugs. So, I am not sure what Champion plugs are good for! I did like that "Champion Ring or Fire" logo they had back in the sixties!

The colors on the plugs you describe sound nominal.

The flat “key ring” gapping gages are NFG.

I've been using them for years.  Why are they no good?  If there's something I don't know, please tell me.

I wouldn't say flat gauges are no good for plugs, but the preferred gauge is wire. The theory, I believe, is the round nature of the wire gives the most accurate measure of the closest points between the electrodes because of the "small footprint" of the wire. The NKG's are in theory, pre-gapped, but I always double check them. I've used flat gauges to do this if I can't find the wire gauge, a not uncommon problem for me. However, if you are cleaning-up and regapping plugs with some miles on them, the wire gauge is the better bet because of electrode erosion.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Thanks for the info.  I ordered the plugs.  Yes a wire gauge is the proper tool.   Champion works in Mopar and Briggs and stratton only from my experence.
