CB750 Float bowl gaskets
« on: June 20, 2007, 12:54:21 PM »
Is anyone else having trouble preventing fuel leaks because the float bowl gaskets don't quite fit?  I've gone through two sets of gaskets and they all are just a little too big, which causes the gasket to bow or buckle.  I'm afraid that cutting some out of the length will just provide a guaranteed leak spot at the joint.  Any suggestions?  Thanks, Brian

Pilot - the gaskets will swell when in contact with fuel and be difficult to install without popping out somewhere, but will shrink back to the proper size after a day or two on the bench or an hour or so under a heatlamp.

I use a hairdryer. Takes less than 5 minutes.

Are you sure you are getting the right gaskets?  I know some are a pain, the round "universal" type are real difficult.

I wondered the same thing. Are the float bowl gaskets the same on later 750's as the earlier ones? Mine (earlier one) are flat and match the shape of the bowl lip. I've had them off and on several times with no problems.

The 77-78 750K and F gaskets are formed o-rings, rubber and round in section.

OK, kind of figured that was the issue, but wasn't sure.

Well there are round gaskets for the 77/78 too. I have them right now and let me tell you, they are the biggest pains ever until they somewhat take the shape of the bowl.

Upperlake, yeah, I learned that also the hard way from the kits I got on ebay (keyster). I kind of with I left the old OEM gaskits in, they worked better even though they were old. When I remove a bowl, the flimsy gasket pops way out and I have to install the spare cold one, I complained to my ebay selller, not to him, but the manufacture, he said he will send me 2 more spares, it will be nice to have spare cold ones handy to check float levels.

El Huero, Nice!

I have another set of carbs I'm not using, I'm very tempted just to keep the original OEm gaskets, I can't see anything wrong with them, why replace them with the cheap replacements? The only thing is when I get ready to clean and and try to soak them in the carb cleaner, it will eat away the rubber :'(

all you have to do is let them dry or like one guy said hit em with a hairdryer.  make sure the bowl itself is free of gasoline or any other petroleum stuff before trying to fit it...  the #2 carb on my 78 750K has a little bump around the rim that's different than any of the other carbs.  it was an especially big pain in the butt so i actually took the rubber at that point, folded it in half and cut off a little bit of the gasket to where it would fit better in that spot.  it worked fine.

if you have a gasket that's particularly annoying try putting it in the refrigerator after it's dry.  you may get a little more shrinkage that way...  this is one case where shrinkage is a good thing!  8D

oh... one more thing..  if you have any vaseline, you can use it to help the gasket stick down in the groove if you're really quick with it.

hope this helps.
