New in MN
« on: June 19, 2007, 09:11:53 PM »
Hello.

I am from Rogers, MN (thats about 30 min north of Minneapolis) and I ride a 1977 CB750F Super Sport.

I traded a 1984 Honda Shadow 700 that was given to me, for this bike in the dead of winter, so I have been finding out all of its flaws as the riding season goes on.

When I got it, one of the spark plug caps had a crack in it, so it would arc out the side and short.  Replaced all the caps and put in new plugs.

Then I got stuck in the rain with it.  It does not like the rain.  I am still troubleshooting that issue.  It will start, but it will die pretty quickly after that.  It is not a sudden death, more like it just putters out and quits.  I can restart the bike again, but the bike will die again.  I can keep it running for the most part if I keep the throttle open about 1/4 of the way, but it will eventually die again.  This has been a huge headache.

In the process of trying to figure out the rain issue, I discovered that the first cylinder was not working properly.  A lot of frustration and troubleshooting led me to the carbs, and I discovered that the float had been installed upside down.  Flipped it over, and it was working.

I replaced the brake pads in the front and back.

I replaced the ignition switch.  That one was a sudden death while riding.  The switch was cracked badly, and the connections were loose and would not stay connected.

I replaced the push and pull throttle cables.  The pull cable broke while I was riding.

I am still in the process of slowly but surely fixing it up.  It is always an adventure riding it.

Nice ride there. Strange you have had so many issues. Some are just going to happen, like the cables. Cant help that but good lube will keep them working longer.

Good luck though. As long as your tires keep rolling, you're ok!

Welcome - nice original F2 :)   The symptoms you describe can occur if the points cover gasket isn't doing its job in the wet.   Did I say nice looking bike? ;)

Thanks upperlake04.  I have not checked the points cover gasket yet.  I will definitely look into that.  Thanks for the advice.

Well, I took Upperlake04's advice, and I looked at the points cover gasket.  It was basically worthless.  So then I took TwoTired's advice about making my own gasket.

About 20 years ago, I got fed up with the cork gaskets.  Leaked and let water in during rain showers, one time use only.  I went to the hardware store and bought a thin sheet of neoprene.  With a #11 xacto blade, I cut a points cover gasket out of the neoprene.  No leaks and I'm using the same one I made 20 years ago.

Cheers,

I put in the new gasket I made, and now it works great!

Thanks guys!
