Battery relocation
« on: June 22, 2007, 05:23:09 AM »
I've seen several bikes on here with the battery and electronics moved to hidden locations, and was just wondering where they hide those things?

I'm guessing most of the bikes you're talking about have solo seats with a raised section (cowling) at the back.  That's typically where the battery and other electronics are stashed.  Smaller AGM or gel batteries are often used because they can be laid on their sides to fit smaller spaces.

I believe most people move their batteries and electrics to obtain a "no sidecover" look, like I did on my CB450...

What type of battery did you use? The make and model number. Will this power the started, headlights and signals??
Thanks

The battery resides under the cafe "hump", with all the electrics mounted under the seat pan we made--->

The battery in the pic above has sience be changed out to a sealed unit from a Honda 919 Sportbike. The other battery didnt have enough "umph" to get the starter to spin..

P.S-->
The CB450 is running a headlite-two 1157 bulbs for running/brake - a small LED stip above my license plate - and the electric starter. No horn, no turn signals, no gauge lights, etc...

Thanks for the response. I have actually seen your build - very cool! I am doing the same with a 76 Cb550 four. I am planning on relocating my battery under the seat as well. I am up in Canada, so I am going to be running the headlight, turn signals, gauge and my signals are single filament. I have been talking to a guy at GS Batteries and he reccomended this battery 14AHBS Premium
Sealed AGM battery (http://www.gsbattery.com/) but did not reccomend mounting it on its side - just strraight up. Anyway I was hoping to get some idea from someone who is doing the same as me, - it seems people have reccomended batteries and then changed them after testing.

I checked out your pictures- awesome job! Are you running just the speedometer? If so what did you use for a tach plug? I am looking to do the same.

Yes, please share fourwheeldrift!
Nice bike by the way. I like how you keep tweaking it way past where most people would call it done.

OK, so I'm *NOT* looking to relocate my battery for aesthetic reasons.

I want to drop my center of gravity. Seeing as I fired the stock airbox, I thought I would drop the cell down to sit on top of the swing arm pivot. Anyone have any luck with this arrangement? Any suggestions about where to stick a mount, or, better yet, where to drill? I always prefer to remove material rather than add it.

Thanks,
Joe

If you are running without center stand, try underneath the swingarm. build a bracket so the battery slides in from the side, then a door or cover to keep it in.

Kosman had some cool battery holders that might give you some ideas.

When you do this, use and AGM battery though as you can mount them however you want. Just make sure to prevent too much vibration from shaking the battery. Just remember to try and maintain ground clearance, no sense lowering the CoG if you cant use it for cornering.
