Quick cam chain question
« on: June 22, 2007, 09:48:28 AM »
So, this seems an easy thing to do on a 750 K3. Take the #1plug out, find top dead center, and then go another 15deg.; this is where I'm worried, where do I look to find that mark? From there, its just loosen the two nuts and tighten everything up correct?

Just to the left of the 1-4 "T" mark is a small spring attached to a post. 15 degrees past TDC will have your timing mark over this post.

To find TDC on #1 you might find it easier to remove the rear #1 tappet cover. Spin the engine and watch as the valve stem rises. As it reaches the top of travel look at your timing marks and spin the engine to the spring post just past 1-4 "T" mark.

There's a 5/8" dia hole in the points plate at approximately 1-2 o'clock, right there you'll see it. It's a marker cast into the aluminum cases and should line up with the advance plate markings.

Now, can somebody tell me the importance of TDC+15 deg. before I put the valve cover on? I just assembled the cam chain and there were no adjustments possible.

With the valve cover off is an excellent time to see why TDC+15 is a good position to tension the cam chain. With the engine in this position you can see that most of the rocker arms are on the base of the cam lobes therefore applying the least amount of tension on the cam chain(chain is at its "slackest?").
