Boy Scout Poker Run Fundraiser Idea
« on: June 24, 2007, 08:35:55 AM »
I'm a Scout Master for a Boy Scout Troop In Orange County NY. I am also involved in our Local Boy Scout Council (Hudson Valley Council).

I have been kicking around the idea of Setting up a Poker run as a Fund Raiser, and tool to Promote Scouting in our Area.

The Poker run would hit locations in all four our our Districts. This include the Area of New YorK State Just North of New Jersey Between the Delaware and Hudson Rivers, iIncluding Parts of North Eastern PA, Sullivan, Ulster, Orange, Dutchess, and Rockland Counties.

The Run would Hit locations like Scout Camps , Parks, Historical Site and other Points of Interest in the Council Area.

This Could be either a One or 2 Day Event, with Overnight Camping at one of the Scout Camps.

The Length of the run Could be over 200 Miles depending on what sites we hit.  One of the Ideas would be to pormote Scouting by introducing Scouting to the Participants

Money Raised Would Go towards Program costs, Scout Camp Maintanance, Scout Camperships (To help Scouts pay for Sumercamp), etc

Do you thinks Riders would come out to Raise Money for the Boy Scouts?

Is 200 Miles to Long, even spread out over 2 days?

Can any suggest good methods of promoting such an event..

Thanks fan any input

A lot of motorcycle dealers sponser poker runs. Maybe a local might be able/willing to help you out? If the Boy Scouts
aint a worthwhile cause, I wouldn't know what is :) Also, your local Lions club, Mason's,etc. can be good sources of help.
I'd think some of them ride as well.

We just had such an event as a fund raiser for three local children with cancer.
It was a great success and I would think your event would be too!
You could even use one of your Scout camps as the motorcycle camp ground for the
event.

I'm an assistant Scoutmaster out here in California.

A long time ago we used to do short navigation rallys as an activity/fundraiser, it always seemed to be a big hit. You may get more participation if you had a car division and a motorcycle division, we used to allow both, we also tried to get sponsorships from local dealers which was pretty successful.

DId you limit your events to just Scouters, or was it opne to the public?

Any Chance your Troop is going to the Brotherhood Camporee in Canada in September?
