Insurance
« on: June 27, 2005, 04:30:25 PM »
I moved to California from Uk a few years ago and have finally aquired a bike over here. 72 CB750. Very happy. Am about to add this to my AAA car insurance policy. Anyone have any tips on classic bike insurance here? Would AAA be a mistake?

Thanks for any help!

Depends.....
I'm paying $164.00 a year liability with Gieko on my 850 Suzuki.  I don't know what the insurance situation in Califonia is though.  They did hit me with a small sur charge for a speeding ticket.  I'd have to say if they try to hit you for more than $200.00 a year for liability they probably don't care to insure bikes in the first place.

I'm concidering Grundy or Haggerty for my restoration but I have some more questions for them before I go with them.  I'm finding it a bit of a hard pill to swollow that they just take my word for the value of my bike.  I'm worried that my word might not be good enough if I have to file a claim.

Well california is cursed with high insurance rates.  I live almost in the middle of nowhere(north dakota whereas wyoming IS the middle of nowhere) my liability will be less than $90 a year. Noth Dakota has a group called ABATE. They offer a motorcycle training program. If a resident was to take this program, their insurance is less AND they do not need to take the DOT road test to get their license. You should see if your state has something like this.

Hi RichK2,
I have my old bikes insured by Condon & Skelly, (800)257-9496.  1961 Matchless G12CSR, 1973 Triumph T149 & 1972 Honda CB350F all with full liability, property damage & loss, (fire, theft, collision, etc.), for $114 at fair value fjor all 3.  They must be 25 years old & with a clean driving record.
Cheers, Don Madden in Moorpark, CA.

Just got insured for my CB400f for $190 a year with the California minimum coverages. I still have to look up whether uninsured motorist coverage is required, but I don't think it is...

That's it... I'm moving south  ;)

Things are a little more expensive here in Ontario (Toronto).  I pay $465 CAD for liability only on my CB550F.  I've had my license for 4.5 years, am 35 and have a clean record.  A 750 will run $700.

There are some areas of the country that have classes of insurance that allow multiple bikes etc., but not here in Ontario.

Tintin, that is a lot of cash.  Wow.

I have heard and know this from personal experience, that insuring bikes with 500cc or lower is cheap, provided it does not have Ninja in the title..

mine is $140 on a 750, but I can pay in halves or quarters, and due to our fabulous winters here in SW Ohio, I let it expire from NOV to March, below 48F..  it will be in the garage. I end up paying 70--100$  ( I roll the dice on the sparce, nice winter days)
I would gladly pay $250,   and be able to ride out west all year ....the grass really is greener..

does the Maple State government meddle with  ins rates up there?? I suppose the are not subsidizing it...  wow...

Toronto is one of the highest place in Canada for motorcycle insurance.  In Montréal, we've got the "no fault system", so I pay 75 dollars can for my 96 SECAII (600cc) ; but our licence plate is 320$can (and we've got a hole 6 month of winter !  The price of the licence plate include insurance for hospital, salary if unable to work after an accident, 1000$ refund for clothes after an accident etc. etc...So that not so bad for a kind of a social democracy insurance system   ;))

Well, that about equates to the amount I pay and the coverage I get for my $460.  Trust me, $460 is a deal for the 550F.  My old insurance company wanted over $600.

Now that being said, a few years ago I insured my CB500K for $330 a year.  Rates have gone up a lot in Ontario.  Idiots (pardon my predjudice) who ride crotch-rocket Kevorkians pay upwards of $3000  :o a year if they're young and a new rider.  And lots of them do it!

i think it was 1996 or 7 in kansas (granted i had numerous speeding tickets) insurance on my 94cbr600f2... $1800 dollars/year... and remember, gas prices were well below the $1.50 mark.  nowadays all those tickets are gone (knock on wood) and i pay 93 dollars per year for liability on the 73 cb350f ... state farm

Believe it or not, it's actually reasonable to carry liability insurance in nj for these
bikes...the 750 is 125 USD a year, the 350F is 85 USD a year, and my rebel runs
in the 75 USD range.  Not too bad, considering that the total cost for the bikes
is a little more than one month's car insurance payment.  Of course, my medical
is covered (by law) under my auto insurance coverage...but, all things considered
in this state that is the poster child for corrupt government and king of bribery,
not bad.

I have been told that, in spite of a good record in another country most insurers do not recognize it and new applicants have to start at the highest rate until one is established here.  I don't know Condon & Skelly's policy on this issue.
Good Luck, Don.

£98 fully comprehensive for the 500.
£135 for fully comprehensive on both 500 and 550 (why is it more? I can only ride one at a time)

Do you live in a dodgy area Mick?

Carol Nash.

Includes free breakdown cover as well.

I haven't found better (and I have tried, especially when they told me the price to add a second bike. Their reasoning is that while I'm out on #1, #2 could get stolen - from my locked garage?)

Carol nash asked for another £12 when I wanted to add a 750F1 - but they do cover 5 other bikes for me and 2 are modern. That was fully comprehensive BTW.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.
