more coil help, please
« on: June 30, 2005, 07:33:52 PM »
So I had a problem where the #4 plug was not firing but #1 was firing fine (as were #2 and #3). I figured it was a plug wire and since my "77 CB750F2 doesn't have replaceable wires, I bought some dyna coils and wires. I installed them per the instructions but i still have the same problem. I know the carbs are fine (I can smell the unburned gasoline from cyl #4 in the exhaust). Anyone have any ideas? I don't think it's the resistor caps (where the plug wires connect to the plugs) because I swapped #1 and #4 and still only have a problem with #4.

G'Day Mate, well the chances of two coils having identical problems like that would be damn near impossible, I'm not even gonna ask if you checked the spark with a different spark plug just to make sure that the plug wasn't the problem, and if you're using solid copper wire leads on those beaut Dyna coils you could temporarily screw the threaded portion of the plug directly into the lead to check for spark, bypassing the cap completely.

Of course with Dyna coils you can just swap coils and obviously if the problem moves from 1&4 to 2&3, then it really is a coil, but I'd bet Raul's one remaining testicle that that's not your problem.;D

How are you testing the spark? Are you earthing the spark plug on to the head or frame, or are you just running the bike's engine? If you've got a burned out valve it might well spark, but won't fire, because there's no compression. Same if there's a blocked jet in your carb, my F2's pilot jet on #4 carb was blocked and it wouldn't fire at idle, and would only start to fire once I gave it a hand full of revs and fuel was drawn into the cylinder via the slide needle and main jet. I know that you've most likely set your valves and cleaned your carbs, have you done a compression test yet? Aren't bikes fun? Ha ha, Cheers, Terry.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Either swap plugs or better still put a new plug in.
