To re-ring or not?
« on: June 26, 2007, 09:02:50 AM »
Long story short, I picked up a CB550K with a rebuilt head that was never put back on. Would it make sense to re-ring the pistons while I’ve got the head off? Odometer shows 3500 miles, but who knows if that’s accurate. The reason I ask is because I should replace the cylinder base gasket. Re-ringing would be easy. How long do these rings typically last?

What do I need to know about honing the cylinders? Stone or grape hone? How much? Where can I buy rings?

Always been my philosophy, if you're tearing into it, why not make it better?

Would be a real pain to get it together and find out it has lousy compression.

Also, where do I find rings? any special procedures for adjusting the end gaps if needed?
