moped cafe.

was looking for a moped for my daughter,  found this one, thought it looked kinda cool.

 ditching the fender, and a new seat would make a neat little scooter.

 Strange as it seams, I could see putting a 125cc or so on that

 I'd better buy her one that 'looks' like a moped, get one that looks like a motorcycle, and my daughter would be mad cause I'd keep tweaking it.

Those little scooters are all the rage with the hipster kids in the city.
I will def. be getting/building one soon (gonna be killer)..

Hey..i had a Cafe Moped back in college, it was a 50cc Garelli that looked like a Cafe stock, anyhow it seized up and was under warranty, used an automatic oil mixer not my fault in doing premix, i raced 125's for years, so i had to run an "oversized" piston which brought it up to 80cc and coming home from school i was doing almost 50 in a 25 and the COP was really "interested" in my moped cuz he hadn't seen one go that fast!!..he told me to keep it down, which i did
but funny i didn't even realize how fast i was going?!?!
i wish i had pix but they got lost in a move many years ago

What defines a 'scooter' or 'moped' from a very small CC motorcycle? I see 250cc scooters... and vespas capable of 75mph.
How do you define the difference? Is it the fact that it's step-through?

Not realy sure anymore, engine size is it for the moped -last- I realy knew about it.

 The step through part realy has nothing to do with it, also, I think honda or yamaha has a 'scooter' that's 650cc, I don't care what people say, two wheels, 650cc, THAT"S a motorcycle.  the step through style is what I normally visualize when I think of a moped or scooter, but a few that I've seen here and elswhere are built similar to motorcycles. I think the ones that LOOK like motorcycles could have some potential as mini cafe's.

 originally (up here anyway) a moped was legaly defined as having pedals to crank it down the road, then they dropped the pedal requirement and went to the engine size, but not sure what it is. I know all the 'no license required' pocket rockets and quads are 49cc

 Speaking of mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles, does anyone else find it odd that a moped or scooter rider doesn't have to wear a helmet, even though most mopeds and scooters ride right along in the same traffic the motorcyclist -HAS- to wear a helmet in?
 granted mopeds normally stay on the right shoulder, but scooters are in traffic right along with the motorcycles, riding just as fast, facing all the same dangers as the motorcyclist.

Got curious, and did a search.
 
 scooters seem to be defined by having a step through frame, and an engine that is mounted in such a way that it forms part of or moves with the rear suspension.


 Mopeds, seem to be all over as to 'legal' definitions, From a quick scan, it seems like if you started on the east coast and rode to the west, roughly half the states you went through could have issues with the bikes classification.

One of my neighbours was throwing out this Mountain Bike, complete with a punctured front tire and rusty spokes, so I took it home and fitted this engine kit that I bought on Ebay, it's 80cc's and once underway, will do around 30 Mph. The kit was dead easy to install, and took about 3 hours all up.

It's great fun to ride, and after a couple of hours riding, the 1 litre (a bit less than a quart) of two stroke fuel that I put in it was about half gone. The seller said it's good for around 180 Mpg, so if someone was game enough to commute on it, it'd be cheap transport indeed, and if you ran out of gas, you can just ride it like a regular bicycle.

The engine kit adds about 15 pounds to the weight of the bike, but it's still a lot lighter than a traditional "moped". Cheers, Terry. ;D

Man that's a cool bicycle! That would be quite interesting to ride ;)

What's interesting is spending many hours studying the basics and advancements of 2 strokes and then modifying the oem parts.

And what you get after doing all this work, is 1 Puch Magnum XK that goes 35mph :o :o

Sorry for the crappy picture before. I had to use my 8 year old camera :D

And here's another one I have that went through 3 changes.

Both of them are now in my basement as paintings that add looks! Like on a mantel  ;D

You should definitely look into a Puch for saving gas, and just for commuting to the grocery store.

      Basically, with the motor kit in place, Terry now has a bike similar to the "Whizzer". Originally the Whizzer was first built in 1939, Talk about vintage! :o

In different countries bikes/moped/scooters are described differently.

In the UK a moped was a small motorcycle normally of 50cc with pedals be it step through or not.

If it had a larger engine it was termed an Auto-cycle.

A scooter was a step through with small wheels and a weather (leg) protecting type of bodywork.

When Honda brought out the 50 and 90 the C50 and C90 were termed as scooterettes.

A few years ago, the Italian firm Gilera brought out a small motorcycle with small scooter wheels, engine and transmition. ???
