Borrani rims,which code numbers?
« on: August 06, 2007, 12:25:54 PM »
Ive got a 78 k7/8 us import here in the UK with drum rear brake.
Can anyone tell me exactly which Borrani rims I need to fit cb750 hubs?
I cant just buy any old 40 hole rim can I?
If you have these rims fitted what number do you have after the RM as below
E.g. WM-2/1.85 18" 40 hole RM-01-4816
Cheers Peter

Hi Pete, you need a WM2 for the front and a WM3 for the rear.

Thanks Sam,
Have you got Borrani rims?
What code after the RM bit makes them specific to the CB hubs?
Cheers Peter

I'm not sure on that one Pete, our rims are not Borrani but they are Italian.
Do you have a wheel builder close by ? If you tell him the diameter and number of holes in the drum and front spool he will be able to advise you.

I think I had better go down that route, doesn`t look like anyone is going to look at their rims and report back :'(
What have you got then?
Im only asking this as im looking at 2nd hand rims.Aparently they can be drilled at different angles for different spoke patterns.
Do you think it matters that much?
Cheers Pete

Your correct on that Pete regarding the drilling of the holes, you have to find out what diameter the brake hub or spool was that the second hand rim came off. I think the rims that we put on the CR are Volanti, they are the same as Borrani and Dunlop rims.
Have you got a wheel builder near to you ?  I can't remember if you told us your location, I figure you are down South.

Ok Sam,I see now I`ll measure my hub and get hold of someone nearby to Rugby.I just thought there must be loads of people with Borrani rims laced to their standard hubs that would know and could save me the bother ::).
Maybe I should be asking what the codes for Akront or Dunlop are instead  ;)
I cant find a reference to Volanti on google other than car rims by the way.
Cheers Pete

That's where we got the Volanti rims from but it seems they don't stock them now.
When I took them to my wheel builder in Warrington, he said he could have supplied them cheaper. >:(
I'm wondering if it's worth Pete sending them up here to him. ???

I have been after the code on the rim, from somebody who has Borrani rims laced to cb750 hubs.I have now been informed,if I am buying second hand,as long as the hub it was laced to is the same diameter as mine it will be ok.
Any thoughts chaps,is this correct?
Cheers Pete

Pete, if you buy second hand, you only have the sellers word that they will be good for your hubs.

If you go to Central wheel with your hubs they will do the job properly, alternately I can get a price for you off my wheel builder in Warrington, he has done work for quite a few guys on the forum.

When ordering rims, you only need to quote the diameter of the rim you require (stick with 18" as 19" tyres are difficult to get good rubber) and the WM code, your front would be 18" WM2 and your rear 18" WM3, quite simple.

Like he said...if you don't know for sure about a rim, you're hoping you get lucky.  I did that with a cheap Excel rim I found.  It was drilled for a disk hub, so I gave it a try.

The spoke hole angle is too severe.  It was drilled for a hub about 2" wider than the front of my 400F.  The spokes should not be forced to bend at all.  You can possibly chamfer the spoke holes in the rim to change the angle a bit, but I'm not comforatble doing something like that on such a critical part.  You could also have a rim re-drilled at the correct angle to a larger spoke nipple to fit your hub.  I'm screwed because the Excel rim already has a .343" hole - basically for the largest spoke nipple you can buy. I can't just re-drill and go up a size.  Good luck in your search.

:-\ It sounds like I`d better hang on till a pair of alloys with cb hubs comes along for sale at a bargain price on ebay, which of course no-one else spots, till then i`ll just put up with mine ;D
