Oil Pump Question 750k3
« on: July 02, 2007, 07:23:35 PM »
Hi,

I had difficulty priming the oil pump using gravity(poured oil into the head through the tappet inspection holes, and in through the main galley), and pulled the pump this eve to prime it manually. I noted that the pump gear can be pulled out some from the pump body, is this normal?

While I noted some increase in resistance when turning the pump while submerged in oil, it did not seem that great a difference. I did see air bubble coming out from the at least one of the three output holes, so I figure something is working. Note the pump worked prior to my tear down one year ago.

I've reassembled the pump and pan, but if I don't get any pressure after gravity priming tomorrow, I'm thinking I'm going to have to consider rebuilding the pump.

Thanks for your thought(s),
Ben

crank it up.  see if you have oil pressure.  if not cut it off and rebuild.

After my engine build I had major problems getting the oil pump primed.  I finally resorted to pressurizing the oil bag to 10 PSI with my compressor.  it bulged a little and when I turned the bike over a few times oil shot out of the open main oil gallery plug hole covering my leg with oil.  I was happy and mad at the same time.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, I'm going to give it a shot this eve and we'll see how it goes after packing the pump with oil. I'll try and keep out of the way of that oil galley though!
Best,
Ben

You'd think so, but...
I primed it again and no luck. Mike Rieck suggested removing the pump again and manually moving the stopper valve to make sure it wasn't stuck and inhibiting flow. As many of you, as well as I now know, taking the pump out and priming it is a messy job that I was not eager to to again. As a last idea, I applied 50-60 lbs of air pressure to the main oil galley after priming that and, darn if I didn't get the pump to start working. I did it a couple of times, then called Mike to thank him for his help. Then I checked it again before putting it away to recharge the battery, and... it started to pressurize then stopped.. no pressure. I don't know if the battery was wearing down, or if I need to actually remove the pump and follow Mike's suggestion. I'll figure it out tomorrow.

Happy 4th to all,
Ben
